How good is Fyfe??

Best goal I've seen ever on the non preferred in one motion under pressure.

He reminds me of David Rhys-Jones. (The older more mature Carlton great that is, not the nutcase younger Swans version)

I watched a Carlton vs not Essendon game once in about 1987 and followed Rhys-Jones all day as he dominated the play. He was always in the right spot, ran all day and never looked like he was tiring.

He just plodded around the wings and took strong contested marks all day long, taking punishment from heavy bumps and whacks and all while dishing out numerous tackles himself. So consistent, so skilful with hand and foot and so much awareness of whats around him.

Fyfe is much more likable though. He is Freo's Hird-like 'Golden Boy'.

Thing that impressed me about Fyfe on Sunday was that he was the one who lifted most when Fremantle needed someone. He was good all day, complementing an excellent all-round game from Mundy, but in that last quarter and a bit he was absolutely outstanding - took the big grabs, won the tough balls, just led the charge everywhere.

Forget the goal. Fyfe showed, I think, that he has the bottle to stand up and be counted when things look bleak. It didn't get Freo a win this week, but a player with that knack is the difference between a good team and one that can potentially challenge for a flag down the line. It's exactly the sort of thing that made Hird a champion.

He's said he was trying to centre it - the kid is way too honest

Great player though - would love him in our midfield

Too right. He was one of very few to show any ticker when things got a bit tough on Sunday. Great leadership from a 19yo.

Excuse me for pointing this out, but aren't you likely to be just a wee bit biased?

It's easy to get all nostalgia and say stuff is better from the past but IMO Fyfe's goal is better than that. Further out and on the run.

Agree.

Further out, hence a much easier angle.

i thought Mundy was very good and did have a better impact than Fyfe. But Fyfe was good you guys should be happy with him:thumbsu:

The Eagles won because of the pressure they put on the Dockers; Mundy, Fyfe included. The coaching staff believe the player that put on most pressure individually was Naitanui and they selected him as best player.

lol haven't seen much replays but it looked to high to be a centre, and who bananas a centre?:D

In relation to Fyfe going #20 in the draft, wasn't he playing 4th's in school footy as a 16 year old?

I'd say that would have a little to do with where he went if that's the case.

The year of the draft he was playing Colts for Claremont. Kicked 6 in the Grand Final. Also played state 18's. Just don't think anyone realised how good he was going to get so quickly. There is a story on our board that outgoing recruiting manager Phil Smart begged them to draft Fyfe and said they would regret if for 10 years if they didn't. Don't know if it's true but it makes up for a lot if it's true (in terms of his previous drafting record).
