PS I'm not going to claim this myself; I saw it posted on social media, it was on the Cricket Stats Scholar FB page. I've worded it myself here aside from the stats.

In his first 2 yrs (8) ODIs he averaged 86 with the bat with a 146* and another 50 for a total of 345 runs, with 4 not outs.

However, since that great start, in the subsequent 62 matches (55 innings), he averages just 22, with five 50s and a high score of 87, with 4 not outs.

"But he's an all-rounder" you may suggest. Well in that same span he's taken just 43 wickets in 62 matches (55 innings) at 41, SR of 40 & economy of 6. Not great.

The stats get consistently worse as his career goes on:
Last 56 ODIs (80% of career) 899 runs @ 19.97, 2 50s, best of 63.
41 wickets at 39.6, 6.07 econ
Last 42 ODIs (60% of career) 540 runs @ 16.4, 0 50s, best of 49
24 wickets at 40, 5.9 econ
Last 21 ODIs (30% of career) 243 runs @ 15.2, 0 50s, best of 35
14 wickets @ 37, 5.8 econ

He has been average for a very long period of time and has only continued to get worse - he hasn't even scored a 50 in his last 42 matches. His bowling has maintained, or slightly improved, but not not to the point where is can carry his extremely poor batting record as an all-rounder and it isn't close to being good enough to play as a specialist bowler. He's a handy middle-period bowler and nothing more. Fwiw this world cup he's gone at 7.6 an over and taken only 4 wickets at 47avg so he hasn't even been efficient at that.

Since his debut in 2015 he's been consistently selected despite a consistently worsening performance. How has someone with such a decidedly poor record for such a long period of time continue to get picked?

I think it's that economy rate of 6

Economy rate of 6 isn't too bad in the modern game.
It's not really that good. Cummins, Starc and Hazelwood are all around 5 and they bowl more at the death and the powerplays, plus they also take wickets and bowl 10 nearly every innings.

Stoinis rarely bowls 10 (averages 5 per game) and takes far fewer wickets going for more runs.

Also Fwiw Stoinis only bowls 5 overs a game on average.

His bowling is not a good reason he should be in the team

I’m sorry have you seen the rig?

I have no issue with Stoinis playing t20 in fact I think he is a very good player in that format....

But for me to have Stoinis picked over Green in Indian conditions in the ODI .....is just mind boggling

Stoinis can't play spin ..is worse than Green in the field and is a worse bowler ...it just makes no sense to me

Agree with his t20s, don't mind him there.

Nothing about him, aside from rig based selections, gets him ahead of Green... or really, based on is record, literally anyone. He doesn't need to be replaced by an all-rounder as he himself provides near 0 in either facet replacing him with a specialist isn't a bad idea either. Abbotts batting would be superior anyway but would play a specialist role.

yeah he just doesn't make my XI.

all of the above comments are valid.

it'd be harsh on marnus to play all games but the final.

we gonna need every bit of our batting line up against the indian attack.

it's not as if stoinis is doing a lot of bowling (averaging 3 overs a match in this world cup).

in any case maxwell is playing as the 5th bowler and marsh/head as the 6th bowler - we don't need stoinis as well.

I feel like with Stoin we’ve been trying to fit a square peg in a circle hole for way too long.

He’s, in my view, a top order batter, not a finisher.

Unfortunately for him, we are flush with options there already.

For team harmony some guys are just good to have around in a team environment and don't need to set the world on fire in terms of stats to have a positive impact.

When I was watching the world cup I was thinking why he keeps getting selected and I thought maybe is he one of those guys.

He brings a tanning machine on tour why wouldn't the lads love to be around him.

What do the Melbourne Stars management see in Stoinis ? Is it reputation and muscle?

Strike rate of 107.5 in 9 innings in BBL13 (aside from the game against Strikers at Adelaide Oval)

Strike rate of 105 in 5 matches in SA20 2024

His best sadly is past him. He will get found out at international level and the better bowling attacks in those franchise leagues.
