How strongly does everyone feel about the 'Australian-ness' of footy vocabulary? In particular, I've noticed an infiltration of terms used in American sport. My personal annoyance is the use of 'play', such as in 'Hird takes a saving mark, that was a crucial 'play.' Good 'ole Bruce is responsible for that one I think. Does this issue get anyone's 'back up', or do we mostly accept that language changes and we have to roll with it?

it doesnt really worry me, but it might to some people who watch it on TV more than i do.

I dont think its wrong, and sometiems it helps to describe the play better...so i got no probs with it

(oh- except when they call marks, "catches" hate that!)

It's not only american terms, i've heard a lot of phrases like "he really breaks the lines/runs through the lines" or "he finds touch with that kick" that you'd normally ***ociate with both rugby codes. Robert Walls in the first instance and Sandy Roberts with the latter are the culprits that come to my mind in these cases. But i guess if it describes the state of play best than why not use it.

Don't worry about the 'American' or TV influence, the AFL have eliminated some of the best phrases from the game:
'punch up'
'stoush'
'all in brawl'
'heck off Lyle' (well maybe the ground management are to blame here)

 :D

You lot sound like Gwynyth from Ormond writing to the Green Guide complaining about the diction of the ABC newsreaders, or someone like "Standards Please" out of Fifty:Fifty :D

Like any language, footy vernacular is fluid and ever-changing. Sometimes it's good (I like "breaking the lines", it aptly describes a player who is running through what would have been forbidden territory years ago), and sometimes it is shocking ("catch", can't come at that one).

But it's to be expected. The way the game is played is vastly different to how it was thirty years ago, so why then wouldn't the descriptions that accompany it have changed also?

Anything you can blame on Bruce McAvaney and Sandy Roberts, is a crime that should result in their death by firing squad.

The firing squad picks up their machine guns....cleeeeeeeeeeeever, they aim, they've spotted a target, oooh that was speeeeeeeeecial...

Bruce rules, leave him alone!

As for Sandy Roberts.. death is too good for him.. there must be something more painful we can inflict!

I'll always applaud the decision to get rid of Drew Morphett, however the only problem is we cant blame anything on him anymore :)

the one saying that shiits me to death even tho it is football relevant is EVERY time someone has a shot for goal (i stress EVERY time) Dennis Cometti ALWAYS says "Question of Accuracy" and its really bloody annoying!

"Josh Carr kicks has a shot from 50, a question of accuracy and hes missed for a behind"
" Tredrea, 25 metres out here, just a question of accuracy you would think, and hes kicked a goal...goal to the power"

I hate it when coaches, commentators, anyone uses players as a plural, ie:

The Wayne Carey's, Glen Archers, Byron Picketts of the game!

For F's sake, there is ONLY 1 of them!
