How is Steve Motlop not considered one of the best players in the competition?

Head over to the Geelong board and you will see he's not their favourite player these days. I think the general consensus is he doesn't work hard enough and plays an inconsistent brand of footy.

He was good last night though.
I think he works harder than a lot of Geelong fans give him credit for. He probably still suffers from that image at the start of 2016 when he was overweight heading into pre-season. I think he probably worked pretty hard in the Richmond game, but his first kick was a shocker and he didn't get much better for the rest of the game (bar one great run and goal). Things started to click early against Sydney, and he continued that into the Adelaide game. Consistency is definitely the problem.

I think the key for Motlop is confidence. If things start well he will take on the game more and can be the difference. If things start poorly, it tends to stay that way.

I also think mentally he can't get himself up for 22-26 games a year. I think he enjoys the game sometimes. That is something that is pretty hard to change from a coaching/player management side of things. There are so many different personalities in one football club and Motlop doesn't have the passion and will to win of Selwood or Dangerfield, so we probably have to accept that he won't bring it every week. If he can bring it in the big H+A matches and finals, we will probably get our money's worth (and more) though.

I feel like if he's able (within what the team needs) to play as a genuine half forward, that's where he can shine. I think the ship may have sailed as far as him developing into a genuine full-time midfielder (despite what he did last night in a winger role), but 20 disposals, 4 inside 50s, 1.5 goals and 1 goal assist per game (eg. him at his best) with greater consistency and defensive effort/commitment could be valueable to a lot of sides.

How is Steve Motlop not considered the best in the comp? Because he's complete crap for 3/4 of the time you contracted him for then suddenly turns it on when his contract is up for renewal.

One from left field, but Motlop was absolutely fantastic tonight. Alongside Dangerfield, he was the only one that gave Geelong any penetration going forward. When he's on, he's almost impossible to defend for the opposition. He's one of the most intelligent and player's at creating space I've ever seen. His ability to recognise a running pattern reminds me of a Rugby League half back, in that he uses the opposition player's momentum to judge his next move and it's no coincidence that he often gets himself clear with the opposition looking silly. While he's quick, it's his intelligent running patterns that allow him to break lines.

Fantastic game tonight. Deserved a lot better.
Posted this in the game day thread but feel like it's pretty appropriate here.

I don't know why we don't see it often enough, but when he has the right mindset he's literally unstoppable because he doesn't just rely on pace, he uses the pace he does have to have a much greater effect by running into channels that he recognises fare quicker than his opponent does. Absolutely fantastic player to watch live- when he's on.

Umm Geelong fans were falling over themselves to tell us he was better than Cyril at one point (of course, who else would you compare him to).

Yes on his day he is very good, But you can't be considered that good when you're as inconsistent as he is, he has waaay too many games where he plays like absolute garbage with all the space in the world and no real excuse. And defensive pressure is never his forte.

I've tried HARD to understand it, but I can't. Anyone who watched Geelong v Adelaide last night knows that he's on another level. Just an unbelievable player.

He is too inconsistent to be at the moment. However I can see him becoming the next Eddie Betts in that he moves clubs and finds that consistency. I don’t think he can find that at Geelong unfortunately.
