How long does the AFLW season need to be?

And they have to pay for it. More game in the summer means more money going into the Crickets clubs coffers

Which grounds? Name them.

If it wasn't for Cricket there would be no such thing as Australian rules football

Whaaat? You are so sad dude.

Take a step back....you are in the AFLW subsection of a football forum you've been trolling for 8 years now.....surely the self loathing can get any worse?

I am just going to sad face your posts from now on

No I'm not, and you don't like it
Tom Wills when to Rugby school in England where he played the Rugby of the time and Cricket and there where he got the ideas of the first laws of the game from
I'm surprised you didn't know that

This is the AFLW forum. and this is utterly irrelevant. Go away, troll.

I personally think get all teams in. Have a 17 round season starting in late Jan and ending in the term 2 Vic school holidays. Will hurt them going against the men but they need to try and establish themselves. Maybe make it so the men don't play on Sunday so women can get all the exposure on a Sunday.

Jeff Kennett, just interviewed on SEN, when asked about the intro of a Hawthorn women's side, said he had "heard unofficially" (remember as a club President, he will have "privileged" access to AFL info prior to it being made public)
the next AFLW season will start and finish "earlier" (but didn't say and annoyingly wasn't asked how much earlier) and Hawrhorn can't be part of it, but the following season after that will start at or near the end of the AFL 2022 season and played in late 2022 (and the Hawks hope to be part of it by then). He did say again that this is only "whispers that he's heard" from the AFL, not official "yet".

Women's competition will start from December through to March next season, according to FoxFooty

"Clubs have been informed it will begin in December – not late January – and run through to March, culminating in a Grand Final the week before the AFL men’s season commences."

"Pre-season training began in October last year, but players will return to clubs as early as late August."

"These decisions allow the AFL to consolidate the talent pool and keep its finances in check, plus give free air to the AFLW Grand Final after the March Community Series but before Round 1."

"AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan and AFLW boss Nicole Livingstone are expected to make the aforementioned announcements at a press conference on Thursday, along with further news from Wednesday’s meeting"

this means that players such as Jess Duffin can't play cricket and football.

As well as all 18 clubs having their own women's team by late 2023, looks like the AFLW will also be played during the summer for the considerate future even with 18 teams it seems:

Season five – January-April, 2021
Season six – December 2021-March 2022
Season seven – Late 2022 start
Season eight – Late 2023 start

So what will we call it now? AFLW 06? or AFLW 2021/22?

They would probably call it AFL Women's 21/22 Season or something like that most likely.

Will be very interesting to see how the competitions fares though now, given it's competing against the summer sports like Int. Cricket, BBL, Tennis & Basketball and also being played in the hot conditions & months compared to previous seasons.

I like the GF the week before the men's start, could make it a real focus.

Starting December is going to raise some big issues though.

I don't think the state leagues can follow, which means no footy for those not picked.

I really like the plan to start late in the year. It also gives the flexibility to play a full season, where every team plays every other team once before three weeks of finals, even when we get to eighteen teams. Twenty weeks, plus one or two weeks off for a mid-season break.

It means there will be footy played in almost every month of the year which is a bonus for fans.

The AFL Commission has also endorsed a change in the timing of the NAB AFLW Competition to ensure the elite women's season has its own window from Round One through to the Grand Final, removing any overlap with the Toyota AFL Premiership Season.
Would like to see that sentence end with "and the AAMI Community Series" since that will coincide with the first and/or second week of AFLW finals. Ideally they just make better use of weeknights and Saturdays for the men's pre-season, leave the Sunday completely free for women's footy and it'll be fine.

There won't be any matches at stadiums that host cricket.
Yes there will.

What about the venues?

How many venues currently have cricket played on them?
The season ran through summer anyway so can’t think of any venues, apart from Marvel that have cricket played on them.

Well I've crossed out the irrelevant grounds, and it leaves:

GMHBA and Metricon--host the occasional T20. Pretty easy to schedule around.

Blacktown--used sparingly for cricket because the pitch tends to be a bit s**t. Again pretty easy to schedule around.

Marvel Stadium as well.

but finals might be tricky if they want to host those at the biggest grounds.
Having a cricket pitch in the ground wouldn't be great for safety etc and they'd need more than a few days notice to get it sorted.
The only major ground that gets used past late-Feb in a typical cricket season is, surprise surprise, the Gabba.

Otherwise I don't think it'll be an issue for prelims and the GF (seems like they're happy to play week 1 at smaller venues).

Technically a few days of preparation is all that's needed, though it's not absolutely ideal, as seen in the first 30 seconds of 2015 when Dale Thomas dislocated his shoulder at mid wicket.
