Why do our fans hate this bloke so much? I agree he has been disappointing this year and clearly he isn't LOVING his footy at the moment which isn't helping the situation, but he has kicked 260+ goals in the past 6 years for us at an average of 2 goals a game.

He also cost us a bag of 2nd hand rollerblades at the trade table back when we snared him from Essendon.

He isn't Josh Kennedy, but he was never going to be.

He was our best forward, literally last season.

His bad is bad, but his good is real good. And generally speaking he has been pretty consistant as a 2nd forward / 2nd ruck for 6-7 straight years.

This being said....

I think he needs a few weeks in the 2's just to find a little form and possibly change his attitude towards his career. If he doesn't take big steps in the next month, I would say we should trade him at the end of the year, BUT and it's a big BUT - he has been a great servant of the Adelaide Football Club.
I think people don't hate the player so much as they get frustrated by how long it takes us to make the call and drop senior players back to the twos when they are clearly playing like shite.

It always takes far too long and often only occurs at all when they get injured.

It's doubly confusing because they generally respond quite well to a stint in the twos when it finally happens.

People just want to see a meritocracy without all the gold passes for senior players who don't deserve a monopoly on their spots.

When we get served up gold pass football and see senior players continuing to spud it up and cost us games like Jenkins did against North people tend to get sick of the sight of that player I think. Carrying on like an entitled brat after finally getting dropped doesn't endear to him to anyone either.

For all those writing off JJ he has been about the league leader in the tall forward/ruck category for the past few seasons. Yes he's had a bad start to the year but then again, go and do a side by side comparison with the Captain up until last week, Walker has been terrible as well.

When criticising JJ, people need to compare him to some of the other similar tall forward/rucks. I am not comparing him to the key forwards as that is unfair, so no Kennedy comparisons .
Ben Brown - the guy is great on the lead but does nothing else, prefer JJ
Eric Hipwood - huge talent, prefer to JJ
Harry Mackay - emerging, line ball
Dixon - too much of a knob
Mason Vox - nope

Overall JJ is still top 5 in the league in that tall forward/ruck category

But he needs a spell to get angry, do some damage and come back stronger

The thing with Himmelberg is he actually presents to contests like a tall forward should - like tall forwards have for a hundred years. He actually brought some consistency to our forward entries because he competed and brought the ball to ground for the smalls. He must stay in - he's only going to get better.

Jenkins should be taking a long hard look at the way he plays his footy.

I’d take all of them over Jenkins.

Your call on Ben Brown is insane, and from what I saw Mackay’s blinder on the weekend was rather ominous.

I like JJ and don't think he's shot but think with the lack of contested marking ability in the forward line him and Tex just not compatible anymore. We need Himmelberg, otherwise when the game's not going our way we just get killed. Him being able to half contests in the first quarter was important. I think it's possible Brisbane/Gold Coast/North/Dogs/Hawks could be interested in a trade. Imagine we'd have to pay about 100k/year of his salary.

Have we ever had a senior player ask to be dropped from the senior team to help regain confidence/ form?

Have there been instances of this happening with other clubs?

Or is this the kind of thing that would happen behind closed doors and rarely be made public by either party?

I'd like to think a professional athlete would know when they need to make a change to work on something.

Fair enough.

I have two cats that stray into my yard and the cheek of them to look thru the family room door and have a peek whilst I'm on the couch watching the footy. They just sit there until I throw something at the door. Time to get a dog!
I’d open that door and have them on the couch with me. Betty bulldog would run them off though, but cats are marvellous pets.

The phone call thing is fair enough IMO

Otherwise you risk the player finding out from elsewhere first

There would be a whole host of internal machinations (minor and major) that start rolling as soon as the 22 is finalised
Teams get sent to AFL
Media promo
Flight and accommodation details
Which guernseys go to which ground
Which top ups are required by the SANFL team, including communicating with the player's home clubs
Match payments
Etc

Add in that you are potentially waiting on other player's fitness too. So it's not always possible to give players a definitive answer about where they're playing when it's convenient to chat face to face with them.
I would think that the coaches should know pretty early in the week whether someone like JJ or Gibbs is getting dropped. Games are over, match review completed, they knew during previous week’s selection who was getting close to the edge. The player should definitely have been on notice prior to their previous game and following review should have been advised face to face that they didn’t do themselves any favours and here’s a few examples that we’ve spliced together. So when they leave the club at lunch on selection day, they know they’re pretty much toast and are expecting the dreaded 4pm phone call from the coach. It’s understandable that the final advice is by phone, but it should only be confirmation of what became abundantly clear was a likelihood following game review earlier in the week. JJ seemed to know, Gibbs seemed blindsided and stated his feedback had been positive.

What cracks when the boys responded in the AFL?
Verbal communications with the media is not the be all. Results on-field would be much more meaningful, as well actions on-field.

Jenkins is simply out of form. What he says is just white-noise unless his form picks up.
Being out of form and whingeing about getting dropped .... FMD ....only word for that is SOOK

Sorry to intrude, but on the subject of dropping players by phone, it appears to be done at WCE too as per this famous case last year:

https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/www...ng-up-on-coach-adam-simpson-ng-b88990189z.amp

I was still under the belief that such conversations are still held face to face...

From an outsiders thought, it appears that Don is well and truly aware it is ‘crunch time’ and is now trying to take control! Your club has so much potential and good, I sincerely hope Don is the one who can lead you forward in the right direction and get rid of some of the more unstable influences... Get selection right and you’ll win this week :)
Just a quick word - I really like your posts on these boards👍🏼 - but mate, thanks for nothing last week !!!

WTF !!!!😂

Sounds like an improvement

At least he's showing some sort of emotion. Up to date every criticism of him in the coaching box is of him showing no emotion and looking like a deer in the headlights
Noone was suggesting he shouldn't have been on the sidelines.

In fact I thought the opposite, it was a good move.

Noone's criticising here, just an observation that he didn't look comfortable.

JJ's comments would not be so bad if he played a ripper in the SANFL.

Pissed.to be dropped, Pykey and him had a robust conversation.

It would read like he was upset he was dropped, naturally, and after working through it with Pykey improved in the areas that were lacking.

But his comments coupled with a stinker of an SANFL game make him out to be a petulant child.

Yep. The sulking was obvious. The exact opposite to how he should have gone about it.

Jenkins is a bloody sook. Look at your footage mate.
Do we really need players with that type of mentality in the team? I know he was great last year, but if he brings that attitude to the club, then it can be contagious and players start playing for themselves.
Has to be traded. Same as wingard at port, doesn’t matter the talent, team culture is number 1 for success.

Well duh. It's not in Jenkins interest to see Himmelberg do well as Himmelberg doing well actively harms Jenkins prospects of getting another contract.

Football is a cut throat industry after all.
Yes he should want to keep Himmelberg out.
But he is a supposed leader of the club. He should be helping to groom the next generation. Publicly voicing his distaste at being dropped when he himself admits he is out of form is him admitting he doesn't want to see these guys develop until he is retired. He should be gunning to get his spot back but he should feel no entitlement to keep his spot when underperforming.

It makes me think that Himmelberg has very little support from a senior player whose role he is being groomed for in the future. No way in JJ mentoring him the way a senior leader of the club should be (which some may think is a good thing in JJs case)

What would Jenkins get in a trade, or what would you accept?

Obviously how much salary remains on his contract and who is paying it affects things.

Late 2nd rounder? would anyone pay that, especially given the way he is most likely up for trade is if Berg goes well and that would mean JJ spends a lot of time in the SANFL?

There would still be several clubs who could use him.

Fourth rounder but only if we keep paying some of his salary.

Good teams won’t want him because he is cooked.

Bad teams won’t want him because he is not a role model for young players.

Best case is someone who has convinced themselves they are almost a contender and need a missing piece, like a North Melbourne. They might take him for a late pick just to see what happens.

Reckon you'd get a 3rd rounder if he found some form.

Currently he'd be worth a packet of cheese and bacon balls.
thats the thing isn't it, 3rd rounder your probably only doing that deal to get his salary off our books.
Less than 3rd rounder you're only doing to get our salary off our books if it is still a really big annual amount remaining.
2nd rounder someone else is only doing if they have a real need and we keep paying some of his salary
