This sort of moves on from who we believe will be our next captain.

Watching Neitz get injured again tells me his body isn't what it used to be. He's starting to get a few softer injuries, and his form isn't what it once was (he was great against the Swans, but that has been close to it.) There could even be a chance he might not captain beyond 2005 if we lose our last 4, making it 10 losses in a row.

The problem is... I don't think I see anyone on the list worthy, or ready, to take on the role. Yze, White, Bruce, Green etc are not up to it. Let's be honest. Miller could be, but he hasn't established himself as a player yet, let alone a fully fledged leader. Same goes for McLean.

So would Neitz stay on, or sacrifice the role for the good of his game and let someone else step up to take it?

Hehe, thought it was familiar.

I think he should stay on for one more year. At least. I would really hate to see Brocky or Miller take it and start focussing on leading rather than developing their footy. In an ideal world, I'd love to see Neitz fit and willing to stay captain for about 3 years, then let one of the two I've mentioned take over.

As for the rest in our supposed "leadership group", they've shown jack sh1t to warrant selection as captain.

He should stay on as captain for 2006, even if it is by 'default'.

IMO there are really only 4 candidates to be the next captain: Miller, Moloney, McLean and Sylvia. Yet they are all a good 2-3 years away from being ready to lead the club.

Neita is over the hill, but under no cicumstances should he hand over the captaincy to Bruce, Green or Yze.

So my pick would be McLean to captain the club in 2007, even if he'll start the season as a 21 year old.

My picks in order for a captain if it had to wait till 2007:

1. Miller

2. McLean

3. Sylvia

4. Moloney. He's been awesome lately, and made me eat my words, but captain? No thanks.

I know it was on another thread but given the current midfield candidates are devoid of leadership or experience Robbo may be a good choice at least for a trasitional period for a year or two.

My short list:

1. Robertson
2. White
3. Whelan
4. Yze
5. McLean

In an ideal world Neitz could captain for 2-3 years more then hand it over to Miller who would then be established. None of the current leadership group should get it with the way they are playing.

Actually, Slander I don't mind your list (can't believe I forgot about white). Have to admit that I'd love to see Robbo captain, he certainly deserves it, and I wouldn't mind seeing the whitey captain either. I think White'd be the next option if Neitz was to hand over at the end of next year. He plays like a captain and is a good role model, gives his all, even in losing sides. Both seem like good clubmen and I think they should be the next in line.

I would include White in the "Yze, Bruce, Green" category so if I had the choice he would not be my captain. Hypothetically, if Neitz has to give it up at the end of the year for poor form/injury/etc... then I really don't know who I'd give it to. Eventually I'd like to see Miller but I don't think he should do it just yet.

That's pretty much my point. I don't think anyone is ready, especially from the leadership group. If so many go missing when we need them, what will they be like with the captaincy?

I think the unfortunate thing is that if Neitz gave it up at season's end, it would probably go to Yze anyway. I wouldn't be happy about that at all, but it's the nature of the beat I think.

Admittedly my list runs a little thin from 2 to 5 but for me whoever got it would be on a 2 year probation til McLean, Sylvia, Miller or Rivers could maybe take the reins.

As for Whitey I wouldn't put him in the goes missing class, he hasn't been as dominant as last year for sure but he has still battled gamely and stood tall in terrible losses against Freo and the Saints this year. He would be helped if we had better ruck depth.

if we had to give it 2 a player now, Robertson by a country mile. he is a very respected player and is good with the media (a big role of the captain) and he can really lift the club. given the position and role he plays he isnt an ideal captain but he is better den any of our other options right now. sylvia mclean moloney n miller n rivers are still many years off. out of all of them Miller looks like the best leader
