Weren't people calling for suspensions to be based on action over outcome?

I feel like for the most part, that's what the AFL has done since the Curtis suspension.

Both systems have issues. I actually think outcome based is better as if someone is injured, there is always an outcry anyway and deciding intent off video evidence is hard. Back in the day, they were suspending players for attempted striking and we don't want to go back to that.

I agree, but there is no perfect system.

Nobody should be getting suspended for an open palm strike to the chest though, but he plays for my team so I understand how that comes across.

And nobody should miss weeks with a cracked rib and punctured lung either.
But they are, due to an off the ball strike for no reason.

No one should be suspended for tackling someone either - unless you knock them unconcious.

Same for open palm strikes to the chest. Once you start puncturing lungs, then it changes things.

By the way, Bas Rutten talks about the power behind open palm strikes from his days back in the Japanese comp. They're nothing to be sneezed at.

Do we move to a system where if something is graded intentional, then it's outcome influenced, whereas if something is a football act, then it's not outcome influenced?

That would be common sense, but this is the AFL where common sense has no place unless it fits the agenda.

I don't know if its been said, but the obvious answer is how do we know the open hand punch injured the Crows guy. If he hit him and it was instantaneous and clear it caused the injury then should be 3-4 weeks.

Did this come up on any of the shows last nigh? Did not see it on 360.
Not that I saw. It seems either it's not worth talking about because it wasn't worthy of suspension, or Darcy/Butts aren't big enough names for it to warrant discussion.

Theres no way to no whether it caused the injury.

But if you open palm someone, off the ball and cause a severe injury its 4+ weeks. You can do the open palm strike but you wear the result.
