Just a question to really put us in perspective here:

Given whatever spot they fill in the team (full forward, ruck, etc), how many of our current players would get into that Brisbane team of invincibility? Forget about game-plan - obviously ours is different from theirs... I'm just talking on talent.

Raph would never get a game, forward or back, in the Lions '03. Kosi would not. Roo would. Hayes would. The resurrected mummy (Ball) would. Harvey would. Max, I would argue, would. There's more, but you get the idea...

There's plenty of other names we can argue about. The point is, i think this might be a helpful way of thinking about do we have the cattle it takes to win a premiership?

You are on the gear if you think Fisher would be at CHF ahead of Leppa, id be tempted to pick Darryl White ahead of Fisher

No way in hell that Sam Fisher is a better CHB that Leppitsch. He'd definitely be in the team though as a running half back/third tall

But then again, it's a ridiculous thing to think about. Who really knows who Leigh Matthews would have rated higher and who would have made the team? Even if one player was better than another there's things like team dynamic etc. to take into consideration. Brisbane people would contest that McRae shouldn't be dropped for a Saint who we think we is a better player because McRae was a very important part of the team (and not a bad player either). But who's to say had one of our blokes been there he wouldn't have gotten picked ahead of him and become an integrel part of the team. And what if say Dal Santo or Power were denied oppurtunities in the super team and as a result never reached their potential, developed a poor attitude, became a hack and gotten traded to Fremantle then delisted the next year.

Not to mention the fact that even Brisbane with their concessions would have the salary cap room for a team with extra stars from St Kilda and would have had to trade away a fair amount of blokes for picks. Plus there's no way 9 mids like Voss, Lappin, Black, Power, Akermanis, Ball, Harvey, Hayes and Dal Santo could survive in the same team.

Far far too many variables to take into account, it's a pointless excersise trying to determine how many players from one team would make another if you ask me.

Whoa calm down, I forgot about Leper and stuck him on the flank.

Positions like that dont mean jack anymore, no one plays forward pocket, or half back flank anymore.

Mate, I said at the beginning of the thread that this wasn't going to be able to take into account team dynamics etc. The point was to look at cattle, and see if our cattle are premiership quality. Montagna is a shoe-in for us right now, every week. I like Joey, and think he's a nice player, but my question about getting into the Lions team puts him into perspective. At the moment, as much as we love him, he's not good enough to push out Scott, Lappin, Voss, Aker, Black, is he?

And if Joey, Blake, Gram, Kosi, Fish, the other Fish, Maxy (as much as it pains me to say it), Milne, X Clarke, King, M Gardiner, Armitage, Jones and probably 3 or 4 others can't get into a premiership side like the Lions, then do the maths - if they're OUR players, WE ain't gonna win the flag with 'em. I love every one of those players - I really do - and I really hope they can grow and become elite. But you need elite to pull of a premiership. You need the kind of awe that teams had whenever those boys from Brisbane came on the field, or that happens when people see Ablett, Chapman etc today. NOBODY fears the Saints crop.

I don't think it really says anything about the quality of our lads though. I would say Riewoldt, Hayes, Dal Santo, Ball, Hudghton and Sam Fisher would get in, 6 players. But how many of Geelong's Premiership side would make Brisbane's? Ablett, Bartel, Corey, Ling, Scarlett, Johnson, Chapman and Ottens are the only you could say for certain and that might be stretching it, yet that's only 8 players out of their 22. What about Sydney's premiership side? Hall, Goodes, Kirk, O'Keefe, Bolton, Kennely and O'Loughlin off the top of my head would make it, just 6. Trying to fit as many players as we can into the best side seen for decades proves nothing.
