The annual round 23 exodus of ageing players is upon us, and already a few that have announced their retirement have been players that might have another year or 2 in them. Given Gold Coast’s current situation, I would be surprised if a few didn’t end up there next year as a player then assistant coach type set up.
Scott Thompson (North)
Roughead
Armitage
Just a few I believe could play another season or 2 up there

Thompson easily could have continued playing at North and would have been very very welcome to. I highly doubt he will be playing anywhere.

I honestly was shocked when it was announced he was retiring.

Gifting cooked, retired players another year on the Gold Coast will only make the Suns worse. Roughead and Armitage have next to nothing to offer on-field any more. Playing the game has passed them by. The type of player they should be getting are those who are just turning 30 and may only be offered ongoing one-year contracts at their current clubs. The Suns should swoop on them with 3-4-year deals. The likes of Issac Smith or Shaun Higgins could potentially give three years of A-grade service and have a greater impact on building a culture than washed-up blokes who will struggle to play a handful of games.

going by that theory, Sandilands and Ballantyne can play on!

No doubt there is a lack of good leadership in the suns.

Everyone bags out Gary Ablett jrs 7 years up there. To be honest, 7 years was and is more than enough to groom another bloke to eventually replace Ablett as captain.

No!
Talking about specific needs. Their ruck stocks are fine, Witts and 2 metre Peter.
They need an experienced forward, a leader in defence and hard bodied midfielder to help them develop

Good luck getting an experienced forward. they might as well pump game into lukosius.

A leader in defence? you mean a Key defender or a mid like Luke Hodge than can play on a back flank?

Im sure they can find hard bodied mids.

I remember in 2016 freo got Rid of Tendai Mzungu, Nic Suban, Matt Deboer and Clancee Pearce. Of those 4, I would of kept Matt De Boer and Clance Pearce for 1 or 2 more years.

GWS got Matt Deboer after Freo got rid of him.

Our young guys at the time (Lynch and May) in addition to some other lead by action guys (Richa, Harbrow) were basically captains the whole time Ablett was there.
Zero leadership provided by Gary unfortunately.
Our mistake for not recruiting some more leadership to go along with Ablett in the early years.

Witts and Swallow excellent representatives for the club but have never really been involved in something successful - that success experience would be hugely beneficial.

Daisy would walk into their team

Not the worst idea.
Has experience in a team at the top when at Pies but has also experienced the lows at Carlton along with the slight positive success to finish this year off.
Could bring a wealth of experience and skill.
They 100% should have tried to get Harvey when North let him go so should try very hard this time around to at least get a couple of seasoned players who have no contracts for next year.

Its weird looking at most non vic clubs 1st captains. They were either premiership players or had some form of success.

Brisbane: their captain was Mark Mickan who was a good ruckman for west Adelaide in the SANFL. He was the main ruckman for west adelaide from 1981-86. He would of been a premiership player for West Adelaide in 1983 if he didnt get injured.

West Coast: Ross Glendenning would of been in the 1977 premiership team at North had east Perth let him go 1 year prior. He played Full back in the 1978 North GF team.

Crows: Chris McDermott and Tony McGunniess. Both were glenelg players in the SANFL. McDermott played in the 1985-6 premiership sides in the SANFL. McGunniess played in 1985 and went to footscray in 1986.

Fremantle: Ben Allan played in the Hawks 1991 premiership side.

Port: Gavin Wanganeen played in the 1993 baby bombers premiership side.

Suns: Gary Ablett Snr obviously with those 2 cats flags in 2007 and 2009.

GWS giants: Luke Power, Callan Ward and Phil Davis were co captains. Luke Power played in the brisbane 2001-3 premiership sides.
