Yep, but even the comment from one of the posters above has pointed out that it isn't the case, Merrett got a week for his strike to the body. It hasn't been their most inconsistent rule interpretation this year but there is at least 1 outlier.

Umpiring and Match Review has been all over the joint.

Hawkins has been suspended for off the ball punches that didn't injure anyone
Not this year though. Hawkins just got a fine for the same grades action, so they've been treated equally this year.

It's a fair punishment for what's been given out this year, but I'd agree that must be changed for next year. It doesn't belong in modern footy where true courage is 175mm Baker running back into a pack.

Really have to wonder sometimes how the opposition fans calling for Lynch to be rubbed out would feel if a player from their teams got rubbed out for something similar, that didn't cause Collins any damage except for taking the wind out of him for a moment or 2.

Forwards & midfielders have used forceful shoves for years to create separation in contests or just before a contest. Sometimes you get the player in the 'wrong' spot and it takes their breath away and it's really not that much different to a fend off where players thrust their arm into an opponents chest to stop them from being tackled.

Now granted it's not a great look when a player gets dropped off the ball like Collins did, but fact is that actions like this happen dozens of times every game and 99.9% of the time the opposition player won't get hit in the wrong spot and will just find themselves struggling to make up ground rather than gasping for air.

Think about how many times you've been at or watching a game and see a forward & defender standing side by side with the defender scragging in the background of the play and then when the ball goes in to their area the forward suddenly has a 2-3 metre gap on his opponent. Sometimes it's a great lead, but on occasion it's body work be it a shove or a swim move that gets the defender off balance.

Maybe if umpires started pinging defenders who grab and scrag 50m off the ball their would be no reason for forwards to have to use actions like this to get separation so they can have a fair chance at contesting for the ball.

Shiel got 2 weeks for a bump on a bloke who played out the game, yet the 'potential' for injury did for him.

The question now is, if a hit as innocuous as Merrett's actually caused the rib injury, shouldn't hits like Lynch's have similar 'potential'?

Any one have footage of it?

Should be a week if they are fair dinkum about stamping it out
Sorry, Rule 237 B9(a) - The AFL is fair dinkum about stamping out unsociable conduct but this shall apply only to Tom Hawkins

Against all odd made the afl as a 175mm human. Brave

Agree. This sort of rubbish needs to be stamped out of the game. And unfortunately Lynch has a little bit of a history with it. He’s similar to Hawkins in this regard. Unfortunately similar incidents like Yeo and Hawkins in recent weeks have got off without suspensions and it should go this way as well.

I’m happy for this sort of stuff to be worth a week though, just to stamp it out of the game.

While we are at it, they should be giving blokes token suspensions for staging for frees.

Get rid of the cheap shots and diving and I think the fans will be a lot more tolerable of the state of the game.
Difference between Lynch and Hawkins is that Lynch does it behind play when he thinks the umpires don't see it. Hawkins does it for all to see. In other words Lynch is SLY, Hawkins is dumb

Shiel is a different act so completely irrelevant.

Agree that actions should be punished based on the action not the result, but that's not how it is. Should be changed at the end of the year, but it won't be.

Witherdens head isn't sacrosanct.

Correct.

Finlayson applied a reverse spear tackle on a Sydney player the other night. Worst incident in years and not even looked at.

The AFL does what it wants. I stopped getting annoyed by it a while ago. Anything goes unless you're unlucky enough to be suspended.

This year's leniency might have something to do with the players bailing out the AFL by agreeing to unusual conditions.

I’d feel fine with it. More than happy for an Essendon player to rubbed out for throwing cheap shots behind play. Lynch does this type crap too often.

Especially when it’s punching.

I’m also happy to see Devon Smith done for diving too. Shits me to tears.

Jeez the outrage in this thread is ridiculous. So many anonymous keyboard warriors with personal attacks calling Lynch gutless, coward, weak dog etc etc. Grow up.

Reality is he gave a little clip to get some separation, happens all the time, it's a go to for forwards. When you're on the field and you want to win really bloody badly you do things like this. They don't always go down like that but he obviously got him in a bad spot.

No, true courage is Baker throwing the footy at a bloke that’s not looking when it goes over the boundary line.
