How much does an Accountant Cost?

How long is a piece of string - I know. Very ambiguous request here, and apologies ahead of time.

I'm helping someone write a hypothetical business plan for a small business - natural health services, shop front in eastern suburbs.

What would an estimate / price range be to employ / pay an accountant to do whatever they would need to do for a small business say quarterly visits per year?

If anyone has any idea about Insurances, etc also - broad high level estimates are fine.

Thanks.

It depends on a couple of things:

How much of the work are you expecting to do yourself?
How much time are you expecting it to take an accountant (I work at an accounting firm and we bill by the qtr hr)
What sort of work is going to required? (I.e. BAS work? Preparation of tax returns? Lodging of Tax Returns?)

The point of the question is best used described by the old saying: "How long is a piece of string"?

I'll give you one tip, accountants are not cheap. They get paid good money because they are good at what they do, and for a business to be successful, they are almost a necessity.

The staff at our firm range in price depending on qualifications and experience - ranging from $72/hr (juniors) up to $200/hr (partners).

If it were a small business, where you look after the accounting file and present the work neatly every quarter for BAS work etc., you're probably looking anywhere between $200-$1000 + GST

Thanks very much Ben. While I mentioned it is hyperthetical at the moment it will be the basis of an actual business case further down the track so your response has been very helpful. We would allocate time to look after the account file regularly and keep in order.

Thanks again.

No problems. Remember, every successful business venture is only as good as their accountant!
