we are not going to make the finals and on the contrary are going to have to face many losses after one another. i don't think i've ever been this shattered about a football season. it's like when i think about our team and it's progress this year, i connote negativeness instead of actuall anticipation to see my football club play.

It does suck yes, but i look forward to seeing the Chance Batemans, Lance Franklins, Jordan Lewis' etc. develop into very good players.
We will be back and feared again very soon ;)

hope springs eternal, but realism really sucks

I reckon that with all the doomsday predictions I suspect we will all feel happy with an "honourable loss" and that is not what we are accustomed to (thats the stuff of fitzroy, bulldogs and richmond supporters)

still, I expect to sing the song at the completion of Sundays game, and after that we are one and one and likely to be only out of the eight on percentage.....and from there - who knows (there's that bull********e hope of a football supporter again, impossible to supress it)

Last seasons "we will win the premiership" was an infinite jump ahead of this season in terms of 'suckness'.

We we're given this massive build-up/hope/expectation of what we we're going to do by a team/match committee that clearly had little idea just how far off from the upper rungs of the ladder we really were.

This season we go in under no illusion that the list needs still more work. That players are going to be cut again at seasons end. That we will invest in talented youth and give them the opportunity to learn at senior level if their VFL form warrants it.

Win/Loss ratio is a pointless stat this year for us as a side. What we can show in discilpine, introduction of players and putting together a game plan is far more important and one I'm comfortable enough watching knowing that is the plan for 2005.

I prefer footballers with skills, but will have to settle for watching the next generation's development.

Crawford is a genuine talent and it sucks that he won't play in a Hawthorn premiership team .

FFS the season is 1 game old.
21 games to go anything can happen.
for example
look at the Penrith Panthers in the NRL. in 2003 they were tipped for the spoon and they ended up winning the minor and major premierships.

We survived the mid nineties. It was tough back then when the club fell hard and finished:

1995 15th
1997 15th
1998 13th

But we all survived and the club got as close as a kick from a Grand Final.

But imagine following the club from 1925 to 1960 in the VFL.

27 consecutive losses 1927-1929
22 consecutive losses 1949-1951
16 consecutive losses 1926-1927
10 consecutive losses on seven occasions

NO FINALS APPEARANCES UNTIL 1957.

Last 10 times.
2nd Last 10 times.
3rd last 5 times.

Pretty depressing times but the supporters stuck with the team and were rewarded in 1961. Then we got a taste for it and it led to the 70's and 80's.

We just gotta stick with them and they'll come good. I can see a light at the end of the tunnel. (just hope it's not a train :) )

Back in the 50s there wouldn't have been anywhere near as much expectation placed on football teams to win .... but your point is well made :)

Best way to deal with it is to view rebuilding as an exciting phase in a clubs history.

While it hurts now look at St Kilda and think in 4 years time that will be me bragging about my teams young guns who are the new Reiwoldts and Judds of the comp but in a hawks jumper.

The bonus for you is you will get the picks!

Trust me finishing bottom and being told you will get nothing for it is one of the most gut wrenching things ya could go through as a fan.

so no matter how low ya sink always :D and stick by ya clun because thats what makes ya club better than others because ya dont desert them when they are down. (i shant mention any teams who are like that even if they are big cats with an orange stripe or a dude with a kinda halo)
