Anyone else feel the same?
Definitely, I lived in Russia for four years and saw a lot of real poverty there.
The thing is that even though these people are poor they are some of the happiest people I have known. I made so many good friends with Russians and in spite of their poverty they are the most generous people you would ever want to meet. I'm not denying there are social problems there and alcohol in particular is a huge issue.
But look at Hollywood and see how many actors there see psychologists on a regular basis, have marriage breakdowns, and drug and alcohol problems. There goes your myth that people who are rich are happier.
I personally would prefer to be friends with people who aren't financially well-off. From my experience they are much more friendly, generous, loyal and fun loving then people who are well off.
