How much would you pay Josh Jenkins?

I dont disagree with all of the sentiments, but that is a pretty shitty article by Bone. "Hey Josh, if you leave we have McGovern waiting to take your place. So take what we are offering and suck it" Really?

He's telling him not to be greedy and think about future success. I think that's fair. Because at the moment he is holding the club to ransom and that also is pretty shitty.

There comes a point where you have to say to Jenkins "what do you want? Success, or an extra 200K a year, because you can't have both"

Either he wants the money in which case he can languish in Brisbane for the next 4 years, or he can still be paid very well (550K ain't nothing to sneeze at) and play in a very good team, surrounded by other forwards who make his job easier, but the team can't keep this core together and get better AND pay him a crazy amount of cash too.

That's if Brisbane are the only player.

Call it an educated guess.
I think 'holding the club to ransom' is a bit extreme. It's a massive decision.

Would be nice to start having players not mind taking unders like at the Hawks (if that's true)

I know there's pros/cons but I'd love to see the player's salaries made public. So hard to guess where it's all going and how much wiggle room we have.

You kinda get it with Jenkins IF the rumours are true and there's a lot of cash being chucked at him. And while the figures bandied about sound bullshit, you definitely get the feeling there are better deals around.

Late starter, project player. Would have made bugger all in the nbl. This is his chance to get paid. His last chance to get paid. Shades of Bock and the suns.

Time for the afc to stand up though. Other players have turned down more coin to stay with their club.

My point is you don't sell the farm to keep him .......as an example by paying Jenkins $800K per year, we miss the ability to get a Neale as an example (extreme example)......are you saying that you'd be happy with that scenario?

Another example .......by paying Jenkins we are unable to upgrade the contract for McGovern, who's being courted by the Eagles (again just an example)

B4 you say "pay him anything to keep him" ......put that statement into its correct context ;)
While I'd like to see us keep Jenkins, the other side of that is that he's not a free agent. And if clubs are throwing that kind of money at him, then that would suggest that his trade value is pretty high. If we're trying to get Neale it's probably going to cost us a 1st round draft pick. We've already given up our 2nd round pick, so if it comes down to it then trading Jenkins may enable us to stay in the business end of the draft while still bringing in Neale (although I remain unconvinced that he's going to leave Freo).

But yeah, I'd much rather keep him as long as we don't have to sell the farm as you say. I've got no issue offering him a 4 year deal though. Yes, we traditionally only offer guys 1 year after they turn 30, but Jenkins was a late starter and hasn't had the same wear and tear on his body since he was 18 like a lot of other guys. So it'd be worth the risk to give him 4 years that will take him through to 32.

Bone is an idiot. Relying on a player to cover him who may himself want to head West one day.
Bone is just setting himself up for his next article: "**** off back to Perth Mitch, we've got 2017 draft pick #79 ready to take over."
Most guest writers for papers have journalists as ghost writers who suggest topics, then edit/re-write what the guest has written. Would not be surprised if Rucci ghost writes Bone's articles.

You reckon port trolls are the only people who reckon the AFC has been ***ed by the walk out factor.

Now the replacements of the gun players we watched walk out the door may also leave.

Everything is awesome.
Perhaps you should wait for something to happen before throwing your skirt over your head.

It's ridiculous money but you have to remember that teams will actually be running around with forward lines like White/Cloke and Mayne/Taberner next season.

There's such a shortage of even decent tall forwards that JJ can command top dollar despite his shortcomings.
Also, salary caps go up every year. So the average of what players are paid is constantly rising.

Sydney aren't expecting buddy to play for 10 years. They have gave him a 6-7 year contract payable over 10
My understanding is that is not what would happen if Buddy retires after 6 years. I thought the remaining years are paid out in one go (and are included in the salary cap)

Either that or he is carried on the list for the term of the contract and Sydney play with their list effectively 1 player short.

The 2nd thing was supposed to happen, but I don't doubt the AFL giving Sydney a pass when they complain they can't be competitive while paying someone who's not playing $1 million +.
