I wish I was someone who didn’t like the drink but you have a personality for it. It taps into a sense of melancholy and also thought and I guess you’re appealed to that or you aren’t.

Some people would think of sitting at home doing nothing as the same as having a few white wines but to me, the idea of beers is 20 times more appealing.

Probably twice a month I will go hard on a weekend (20+ drinks). Refuse to drink during the week unless it’s a very special occasion.

I grew to like a drink too much. Drank to be social drank because it was the thing to do. Never had a handbrake.

Ultimately I am an alcoholic. Not because I crave a drink but because once I start I cant or am unwilling to stop. The choices I then make are not the best ones .

I now am able to at least replicate the feelings that drinking gave me. Music still sounds the same and I can still dance as bad as I did drunk. The best feeling is waking up remembering. Or its alzheimers

Every Saturday. End up having fairly big sessions. Even more so these days with footy being in the morning or at midday leaving me all afternoon to get on beers early and go into the night.

Might have the odd beer with a meal or a few on a Friday night watching the footy.

What if you have work the next day or a job interview? Will you say 'nah, won't bother' or can you have 3-4? Or do you end up drinking 10 Coopers? If it's the former two you're okay. I drink far too much but I don't put it ahead of things.

People will tell you 'if you can't stop when you start' you're an alcoholic. People can't open a packet of chips without monstering the whole bag... does that make them binge eaters? 'Have you ever done something regretful while drinking?' Uh yes. Naturally. If you've had a beer you've said something silly. What about those blokes who go out, drink 10 Smirnoffs, and punch on every weekend? 'Do you spend money on alcohol?' Yeah it's expensive... these signs of alcoholism – reportedly – aren't really. They're byproducts of any drinking. I think you just need to know when it's affecting you and when it's not. For some people that comes with more of these checklist signs, for others it doesn't.

Personally, I find it pretty easy to say no to a beer on offer and find it easy to go without if I'm meeting my girlfriend's mates or something. Maybe that's because I know it won't be 10 beers for me, so why bother? Who knows. Then again I regularly have a beer by myself so other people would say that's a problem.

Could easily see myself spiraling out of control if I didn't have a job and healthy personal life. I'm usually pretty good with hangovers but have noticed that they really mess with my stomach more than anything now, so smashing 10 beers on a weeknight really isn't worth it if I have to front up to work.

Exercise really is the antithesis (not sure if correct word) of alcohol. If I come home from work and feel like reaching for a drink, all I need to do is spend half hour on the bike or bag or go for a jog and that craving dissipates immensely. Also, the calories are an absolute killer as well.

If alcohol was zero calories and there was no associated hangover, damn, I'd be a mess Monday to Sunday.

Somewhere between rarely
and never. I dont have anything against drinking occasionally, its just not something that i ever get a craving for and its shit for you so makes it easier to just not bother with

I go through phases of not having much to having a couple every night.

Sometimes need one to allow the brain to slow down when work is really full on.

In my early twenties I'd hit it ****en hard. Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Generally not all three. Thursday was always the biggest but we occasionally pulled some epic benders in the Uni days; a night at Goo on Thursday, Uni pub on Friday then a couple of house parties on the Saturday. Waking up at 5pm to a lounge room smelling of Ouzo or bourbon. Occasional weeknight was pretty special too. Throwing up was often just a normal part of the night, looking back not so proud of that.

And yes, Silent Alarm music sounds much better with it, and it does tap into something for some people. Melancholy? Maybe, but all i can say is I've had nights out and honestly the alcohol and music were more appealing to me than the people. It's a visceral hedonism kind of thing, needs no sophisticated explanation.

Heck, I've even had the odd night at home alone getting drunk and stoned and watching rage or listening to music. Not often enough to be a problem.

Some nights my mates wonder why I don't even want one or two. Other nights i want to get slaughtered like the good old days. Go figure.

These days I particularly love a beer on a hot night. Can't get smashed as much as I just don't pull up right. I wonder what I'd be like if i lived in Perth or Adelaide or Darwin. Probably a piss head.

I wish I could pick 2x options as I struggled to pick between "Never" and "Only Socially" ie I needed an "only on special occasions* option
But I only drink a fraction of the times I go out.... so I went with Never, simply because it's closer to the mark than "Only Socially" .
I then tried to switch my vote to "Only Socially" , but couldn't :p

Dammit I clicked the wrong box in the poll
Glad it’s not just me . Which box did you intend to pick ? Only socially ?

Ironically I think one reason I've not drank as much recently is an growing addiction/dependence on good old fashioned soft drink. Can't beat a coke on a hot day to a point where I prefer it to beer or even mixing it with a spirit, as it changes the taste. I don't know where this has come from.

It's not that I don't want to consume alcohol, it's just that my favourite beverages currently don't have it and are better without it.

My biggest issue is I really enjoy the actual taste of alcohol. If I'm drinking spirits they need to be strong to the point of a bottle is 6-8 glasses.
Have a couple of friends who are like this but also others that love getting drunk but will do it with a spirit and mixer that masks the taste of alcohol altogether.

I’m very lucky in that I don’t like the taste of alcohol /most alcoholic drinks and didn’t grow up with alcohol since my parents drink either as rarely as I do and only outside the home (dad) or not at all(mum). I’ve had alcohol 3x this year , but they have outside Perth!
-1x butterbeer in Adelaide at a Harry Potter event
-1x wine tasting in Tassie
-1x glass of sparkling with dinner in Melbourne on GF weekend

Funnily enough I do “boozy” post nights breakfast/brunch with colleagues , dinner/drinks with colleagues/friends/as a date , nice dinners and even karaoke often enough, but don’t actually drink alcohol at any of them nor the footy (Lemon, Lime & Bitters , Ginger Ale and Water FTW)

My uncle made me drink some scotch when i was over at his place with a racking cough one time. They all pissed themselves over how much coke i had to put with it, before i could drink it. Awful stuff. Only way i can drink spirits is in a cocktail. (genuinely like the taste of wine and beer tho)

I very much dislike the way when someone says they don't drink they always look like they want someone to congratulate for this.

I dislike the opposite- having pressure put on me as to why im NOT drinking or not drinking much- have had this happen in the past. Like gtfo and mind your own ****ing business.

I had a sober friend growing up. We never pressured him to booze and accepted his choices.

Leaves town. Starts uni. Instantly becomes a pisshead party animal with his new friends.

I was actually really annoyed by that.
