I think that's the sub-text here. People can talk about Eddie gaffs, Nicky Winmar incident and even our football record, but we're not unique in that department. Jeff Kennett is a gaffe machine, there was a lot of racism in all clubs, and our footy record re flags was pretty dismal in the later half of 20th century. People don't like getting their arse handed to them by a club of such origins.

Sectarianism. Hatred of the club most associated (historically) with Irish Catholics. Dont underestimate how strongly this stream of bigotry ran through Australian society. Has really only died down in the last 30-40 years.

The story has a point but it all boils down to our early history - pre 1958.

The number of flags is significant, but go into the finals appearances between 1911 and 1958 - the total of finals series in those years is nothing short of mind boggling.

Quite simply we were a giant amongst Lilliputians in those days - always powerful and threatening and nearly always in the finals.

Jealousy is the reason and the media have manipulated and assiduously nurtured that ever since.

Make no mistake - the hatred would have died long since - if not for the vested interest of media and AFL.

I never understood the hatred for Collingwood when I lived in Melbourne, I get we are big Victorian historical club with proud reputation and lots of titles but we are not the only one. Why is it us over Carlton, Essendon etc. As someone who didn't grow up with the game I never understood and to this day don't quite get it.

True, the Marxists among us would argue there is a fair element of class warfare in many of the rivalries. Although it doesn’t explain Richmond and the long forgotten Fitzroy. I figure they just boiled down to a form of inner suburban gang warfare.

Read my post above and research the record of finals appearances for the Pies from 1911 to 1958 - no team ANYWHERE has anything approaching such an astonishing record of excellence.
