Yes am well aware we have Fremantle next week, there will be a thread for that.

What I am interested in discussing is how we can beat GWS, as they loom our biggest threat towards the premiership.

What is it we need to do in order to knock them off??

Not going to go into a big spiel yet as I want to watch them a lot closer when I get more time, but would love to hear others opinions and thoughts around the keys to beating them.

Firstly, Blicavs has to play on Scully. It's a non negotiable. If ever there was a tagging role that Blicavs was built for that is the one.

Secondly you have to play them like we played the dogs. Must close down on them immediately or their disposal and run will cut us up.

Right vTB

Their work under close pressure is getting better but yes, when it's in their face they slow down.

Need Scooter back for that one.. sadly dont think it will happen.

They're overrated.

This.

They are supremely talented but lack the maturity to win a flag at this point in time IMO, unless all the other contenders fall over.

They're also yet to learn to win away from home on a regular basis (which albeit won't be a factor in a fortnight's time).

Keys to beating them are fairly simply IMO -

- Nullify Mumford in the ruck, and hurt him around the ground (he's only averaging 10 possessions a game this season)
- Force J Cameron to get marks and possessions up on the wing, he's deadly anywhere inside 50
- Put a defensive forward on Shaw and/or Williams. We have done great jobs on Brodie Smith the last few times we've played the Crows and need a similar plan
- Play a second tall forward... Davis is an excellent forward and will most likely break even if not beat Hawkins, so it's vital that Taylor/Stanley gets in dangerous positions to give us other options

Come ready to play tough and relentless footy from first bounce. They are still inexperienced and a bit immature for mine and are certainly gettable. Do not allow Toby green to get a kick. Quite confident we can knock this mob off in September at the G.

The only issue will be getting the chance to play them at the 'G. We might play them in the finals, but it could very well be over there as they are an excellent chance for top 2 and two home finals..

The biggest concern for me is beating them in finals. I hope we experiment in the home and away game so we're well prepared for any finals encounter. They will likely have a much better team available in the finals.
They have much better runners than Geelong and at a bigger ground like the G could expose us.

Yep, until you can prove you're capable of beating good Victorian sides away, or even better, on the MCG on a consistent basis, I'm not sure how you can be rated.

Much like people getting carried away with Adelaide earlier in the year.

With four losses already I'm not sure we're really in a position to 'experiment'. I know it's a much tighter competition this year, but last year a 16-6 record only just got you top four (with GWS's percentage of 143), which we obviously must aim for.

I reckon 6 losses this season will almost see you finish top two.

Adelaide and GWS are currently a game ahead of us, with 3 losses. Below are their remaining games I rate as 50-50 propositions for them:

Adelaide:
Melbourne - TIO Oval
Geelong - Adelaide Oval
Port Adelaide - AO
Essendon - Etihad Stadium
Sydney - AO
West Coast - Domain
... and that's not including Bulldogs at AO or Collingwood at the MCG. If Adelaide get through all those games only dropping another 3, they'll have done extremely well.

GWS:
Geelong x2
Sydney - Spotless Stadium
Richmond - MCG
Bulldogs - Etihad Stadium
West Coast - Spotless Stadium
Melbourne - Uni of NSW

Of course our draw poses challenges too, with a trip to Spotless and one to Adelaide Oval, plus home games against Richmond, Sydney and GWS, and another date with our bogey side Collingwood.

Yep agree-that's why our dopey losses that should have been wins, are so costly. Need to finish top 2 and it will be tough. Adelaide have a reasonably tough run though, so it's possible if we can get it together. And gws drop games too.

We are the best Geelong side since 2007. Yep even better then 2009 and 2011. Your thread title should be "how do GWS beat us?"

We must take Mumford out in the first few minutes...... seriously we cannot allow him to take out a Duncan, Selwood or Dangerfield

Wear the right boots for starters

And maybe have an alternative available if it's not working

I've never seen a side slip over as much as Geelong. Murdoch is a big culprit.
