How to beat GWS

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

You really haven't watched them have you.
Scully runs in zig zag patterns. He will start (let's say) in the back pocket. Run up to the point of the square. Cut across and run, run, run.

In something like the first 8 games of this year he never had one break on the bench in the first half. Not one.
He is an athletic beast. And he's their conduit.

Lol......shaming language :$ Do better
All of your points about Scullys running ability have nothing to do with my point

He's nowhere near being their most damaging or dangerous player.

I never said he was.
I said if ever there was a tag built for Blicavs, that Scully is it.
No one else in the team will stay with him.

No idea what you mean re; shaming language.

Scully???? GWS have much bigger scalps than the likes of Tom Scully.....
He's their best mid on the outside and has great endurance and decent speed. Seems like a good option to me.

Must be

Blicavs/Guthrie to Scully
Scooter (He will be fit) to Kelly
Joel Selwood to Ward
Dangerfield to Taranto
Duncan to Shiel
Thurlow to Whitfield (Would bring him Back for this one)
Menengola to Heath Shaw
Murdoch to Zac Williams

Guthrie to Greene
Stewart to SJ
Kolo to Matt Kenedy
Henderson to Cameron
Lonergan to Patton
Thuoy on Himmelberg

* Mackie Interchnage - Stewart Spare 7th man

My changes from the WC lineup to come in for GWS would be

INS: Tom Hawkins - Mark Blicavs - Jackson Thurlow - Aaron Black
OUTS: Rhys Stanley - Darcy Lang - Nakia Cockatoo (Injured) - James Parsons

* This sort of lineup allows for players to rest forward like Danger and Selwood
Black I reckon would do well drifting in as a third tall

So full Lineup

Backs: Jake Kolodjashnij - Tom Lonergan - Jed Bews
Half Backs: Zac Thuoy - Lachlan Henderson - Cameron Guthrie
Centre: Jackson Thurlow - Joel Selwood- Scott Selwood
Half Forwards: Jordan Murdoch - Harry Taylor - Sam Menengola
Forwards: Aaron Black - Tom Hawkins - Daniel Menzel
Rucks: Zac Smith - Patrick Dangerfield- Mitch Duncan
Interchange: Tom Stewart - Mark Blicavs - Andrew Mackie - Steven Motlop
V good post, you have though a lot about this one, and mentioned quite a few GWS players I know zilch about.

GWS overrated? Lol, no, what they are is injury ravaged. If they weren't, and took up where they left off last year, they'd win this years flag in a canter.
True, but could say similarly about Doggies.

How about Carlton? They embarrassed us easily last year, and they are better this year. Hate to admit it, but they are progressing really well.Their run off hb is great, their mids always match up well on us, Gibbs is having an amazing run of good form. We need to deal with home and away games before concerns with GWS in finals.

Every team just has those teams that get them and match up well and the teams know it!! They have confidence against the sides they know deep down they have the measure of. Our bogeys are bottom sides... and I would prefer to keep it that way. Currently we have no issues against any of the top 8 clubs. Sydney was our biggest achillies and they have fallen off... Could make a big difference

If we go on to beat GWS up there, I think we deserve the tag of premiership favourites up till the point.

Would mean we have beaten Adelaide GWS bulldogs port Adelaide and then Melbourne who are top 8. It will be a battle of premiership favourite rights.

Do I care if we are premiership favourites?? Nope... but if we beat them I feel we will deserve to be called just that

Shifting goalposts again I see, out of the teams that have beaten us only Collingwood have been our bogey team, the side that beat us in the 2010 prelim which you like pointing out to us when it suits your agenda. Bombers, Suns and Eagles we've had the upper hand over so they just out-coached us on the day.

We've been flag favourites at stages in the past 5-6 years and you know how well that ended. Our biggest bogey is beating teams in finals, so stop worrying about winning premiership and worry about making them first.

It's a consistent theme we beat the top teams and struggle against lower placed teams, this year is shaping no different.

We didn't struggle in the finals last year, we won one lost one and made a prelim. A team doesn't struggle in finals if they make a prelim, this is common sense. We simply lost to a better team, they where our one bogey from the season in the top 8, and where are they now?? Things could look a lot different for us this time as we have the other top sides covered. No sydney this time. Without Sydney we most likely would have knocked over the dogs and won the grand final.

Firstly, Blicavs has to play on Scully. It's a non negotiable. If ever there was a tagging role that Blicavs was built for that is the one.

Secondly you have to play them like we played the dogs. Must close down on them immediately or their disposal and run will cut us up.
Menegola has a pretty good tank. Not sure if he's defensive enough though.

Scully is critical to the overall GWS game plan...and he's very difficult to contain because of his run......

He can't outrun Blicavs....but not sure Blicavs can curb his influence. It will be well worth watching.

Menegola (on song) might be a good option. He could hurt Scully going the other way and getting on the scoreboard.

Whatever, GWS at Spotless won't be easy....

10 games to go, and we have 8 points on offer against them. That could decide the top 4 for sure.
GWS seem overall too talented, too deep. We have some obvious top end talent, but our bottom 6 is really bottom end.

Our problem is to play well at the G, hence Pies are our bogey team as we play them at the G most of times

When we had him, he was our best. Pity injury wrecked him.
And I've nothing against him, but it doesn't change where he is in 2017. If GWS get us on talent its more likely to be the top 16 than bottom 6, they still have a lot of extremely good players to draw on and probably a better mix than our equivalents overall.

They are too talented and too deep. But they haven't got the recipe correct yet. They are not playing as a team at a lot of stages throughout every game. It's almost like they are trying to create individual highlight reels.

Need to get them right now before they actually do get their act together.

Ok my changes based on Freo would be

INS: Scott Selwood, Jackson Thurlow, Aaron Black
OUTS: Rhys Stanley, Jake Kolodjashnij, James Parsons

How can you decide on outs before we have either selected a final team for Sunday and more importantly actually played the match?

Parsons may get 20 disposals, kick a couple of goals and have 8 tackles - that keeps him in.

Guys like Kolo or Stanley could still miss this week or we have injuries to others. Surely we actually have to play the match or at majority of the match before changes are even contemplated

We must take Mumford out in the first few minutes...... seriously we cannot allow him to take out a Duncan, Selwood or Dangerfield
Seeing what Mumford did to Dayne Beams tonight (serious shoulder injury from bump), it has to be an imperative that he is nullified next week. Mark my word, he will line Selwood, Danger or Mitch up (again)

He runs hard all game as well, like he is consistently running at 80% pace but for the entire game.
Absolute gun and your description of him being their conduit is perfect imo

Ffs worry about tomorrow before predicting changes for next week

I went to a GWS game at Spotless earlier in the season, and you're right - Scully does indeed run in this 'zig-zag' pattern. I found it interesting at the time because it reminded me of Blicavs, who I noticed running the same 'zig-zags' in a game I attended at the G' a couple of seasons back. Not sure if Blitz is used in that way now, but whatever, he's still our best choice to run with Scully.

Parsons stays - keep him up forward where he has shown he can be dangerous

Scully is actually such a barometer for that team. He's reached that elite level people expected him to get a few years back. He's a very good player.
