So I've read a few articles this recent week on the back of about 90% of "experts" finally actually watching us play, and with that comes the usual over-hype: "real deal", "West Coast can win the Premiership" type articles - which, even for me a very positive person, feel is an unreal expectation.

But while this year I think is well beyond us for a premiership, we should start believing that we're in with a chance over the next few years. While this thread isn't meant to discuss what are our chances at a premiership, in terms of West Coast vs. the rest, it's more about what further improvement or changes do we need internally in order to build a premiership-worthy side.

Do we just need to recruit/trade one A-grade mid to top off our team, or is there more to it?

The forwards:

I believe what we have right now is a just about a "premiership" forward line in terms of their age, their ability and the dynamics in player attributes we have:

Kennedy
Le Cras
Darling
Cripps
McGovern (F/B)
Hill

With - Yeo, Naitanui, Sinclair, Lamb amongst others able to spend time up forward.

Not only have we consistently averaged high scores over the past few years, but we've got that hunger back in terms of defensive pressure - led by Cripps we lay the most tackles inside 50 and with Darling starting to find fitness this will only improve. Kennedy and Le Cras will be in their prime for the next 3-5 years depending on injuries.
Naitanui has proven to be a good goal kicker when resting forward and most of our rucks are good enough to hold a position or at least provide a contest.

Most pieces are in place in terms of our forwards, if there's any improvement to come, it may come from Lamb, Newman, Karpany (long shot) or a recruit filling in as that real X-factor small forward, not that we really lack in this area, but those guys could offer something very unique that will just complete the setup, as well as adding depth.

The weakness comes from perhaps an over-reliance on Kennedy - while this is probably true for most teams with such a dominant forward, we need Kennedy fit more than just about any player if a premiership is to be a possibility.

Midfield:

Certainly an area of further improvement, where off-season trades/recruits are again likely to be a focus. But the pieces may already be in place and it's just a matter of general improvement all round and a continued development of the gameplan.

The big factors of whether we really make it come down to Shuey turning from potential A-grade to out and out star. A player who is in brownlow contention, who's lifting the team with standout performances. I like what Shuey is doing this year, he's been great, but I think another one or two steps up to be elite could make a huge difference.

The other improvements are turning our hard running midfielders - Sheed, Gaff, Masten etc. into goal scorers - so far Masten has 0 goals, Sheed 3 and Gaff 5.
The last few years the best teams have had one of their wingman (Smith, Jetta, S. Hill) average a goal a game, so it's important for at least one to take on that more attacking role. While goals isn't all, it's getting involved with scoring through assists and the like as well.

Another factor is seeing just how good Sheed, Yeo and Duggan can get. We've seen a bit from all these guys to understand that the potential is certainly there, but it's whether we can get the best from them, and get that on a consistent basis and on the big stage. If one of these guys takes over as #1 mid with improvement elsewhere, then I think we'll be well on our way.
This is compounded with finding a diamond in the rough (Cavka, Waterman, Colledge or another recruit), the potential for another breakout player to add much needed depth will be very important.

Naitanui is a premiership player. The support he gets from Sinclair or Lycett will be very important, especially in their roles as forwards as well as providing impact when Naitanui is off the ball. I think that even if those players don't come on quite as we expect Naitanui is good enough to dominate and a 2nd ruckman isn't crucial to a premiership team.

Priddis - is he still around when we have our tilt? I think so, and if he plays like he is now, he'll be very important. Weaknesses aside, he is absolutely as reliable as they come in that centre square, if the tide is turning you can rely on Priddis to get that hard ball for a clearance or put the clamps on with a tackle to stop the momentum. Some may disagree, but he's premiership quality as is.

The Backs:

Big question marks here for mine - right now we're looking good based mainly on structure as well as most players playing out of their skin. Eventually, you expect this zone to break down and get exposed and that's when you've got to rely on player skill, especially from the talls and as much as I love Gov and Schoey, they aren't 1 on 1 beasts.
Even Emac may not be the same (I pray he will be), a knee reco is a huge recovery, Brown is having his 2nd and even if he's fine, I'm not sure he's quite the quality of a 2nd tall in a premiership team.

I think for this backline to become premiership worthy we need a few of the following:
Our structures can hold up
Schofield/Brown take another step up
Gov stays down back to provide assistance
Barrass/Powell or another recruit/trade jumps up

So it's all about the talls - Hurn, Wellers, Shep and Ellis are quality runners off half back, their good enough for mine with continued improvement to be premiership quality players (a couple already are premiership players). Rosa, Bennell and Butler may or may not be good enough in 2-3 years when we're really in premiership mode, but they do add decent depth.
While Nelson looks very composed, strong and skilled - if he fulfils his potential he could be a star on half-back and that extra bit of class that we'll need.

TL;DR

So basically, there are still a lot of ifs, buts and maybe, however I think a lot of the players are already on our list in order to have a tilt at a premiership, but it'll take some big leaps of form for some players, while others just need to continue to do what their doing on a consistent basis.
There is obviously the need to blood some quality youth and hope that 1 or 2 become A-grade to ease the burden on the older players.
The main concerns are having an elite mid, more scoreboard impact from mids, quality KPDs, a mix of players up forward and continued execution of the gameplan through the midfield and down back.

An experienced recruit - Coniglio, Motlop etc. may be a quick fix to some issues, but even they don't guarantee premiership success.

What are your thoughts?

I believe finals football is a level above home and away. Something like:

NAB Cup >>>>>> H and A >>> Finals.

Our finals experience is very low and I expect we'll learn some lessons the hard way before we are ready to win the flag.

The sooner we can gain finals experience and start to iron out the creases that get exposed the better.

West Coast are looking great atm, but finals are a different game. WC's free wheeling game style may be shut down, and thus they may be forced into a grind/slug fest in order to neutralize WC's open play of fast ball movement, rebound and kicking big scores. Whilst WC have an improving midfield, it remains to be seen whether they have they quantity and quality of midfield grunt to win the slug fests under finals pressure.

I always remember we won a flag with ash Hansen and Q stick as our key forwards

Now all due respect to those guys ....they are not hall of fame players ....they got supply ....if you getting the ball in your forward line you score .....with our forward line we will score ok

We press up a lot so we are vulnerable to being score against on the slingshot back

Our midfield is what's improved and that's the game is played a lot of the time .....contested ball and then outside spread ....

Absolutely. We are still probably a couple of seasons away from genuine contention but fans should be excited, that's what it's about.
It will require the likes of Sheed, Duggan and Yeo to step up to that A grade level each and every game and some exposure to genuine finals pressure first. They all have the potential but certainly in Sheed and Duggans case they need more games and experience.
We've still yet to see the kids handle and beat a top 4 H&A side let alone under finals pressure, clamped down on, bumped, thrown and crashed, with no time to think/act against experienced, hardened, grown men.
They need more exposure yet and so does our game style. There is still much to do and future hurdles to overcome but we're building a good team.
I would love to believe he can keep going and be around for it but I think Pridda may be gone by then.
It has simply taken us too long to finally assemble the decent players we needed to complement him. Shame.

I think we're lining up the chess pieces. Great age bracket across the squad, quality along each line and we're developing some good competition for spots which guards against the injury curse. Probably just need to either draft in one more top line midfielder, or give it a couple of years and Yeo, Sheed and Duggan will provide that quality (been very impressed by all 3 this year). Can Priddis keep going? He doesn't seem to drop off so he may have a couple of years left.
To be honest, we're a smoky this year if we hit the top 4. Play Freo in the first final, have a second home final. All it takes is the other side to be off a couple of percent and us to get our confidence up. I wouldn't expect us to go past a prelim, but it's not completely out of the question (see Hawthorn 2008).
Against us is we're a couple of injuries away from having our structures severely dented, we're a young side with a tough run coming up so we might tire by finals. In future years our gameplan may be found out by the opposition (see Port Adelaide this year). I'd be interested to see what Simmo's plan C, D and E are (we're probably on plan B at the moment with our backline injuries, and so far he's come up trumps). We've probably gone under the radar a bit, so expect sides to come up with measures to counter our current style.
We're very well placed to have a crack for the next few years, probably peaking in 2017/2018, even if we don't add to the current squad. We can maybe get there faster with a couple of good trades. I'm enjoying the ride- a far cry from the doom and gloom at the end of 2013 with what looked like a squad with a dearth of talent and a rookie coach coming in.

Bottom line is our midfield needs to improve atleast another level or two

We are not winning games because of 30 yr olds like 2012 so I do hope that we are the real deal.

For me it's all about midfield depth, we need more quality roaming through there. I would also like another quality FP and a running HB.

Just to the OP. Lecras is our goal kicking mid now.

We need 1 more quality mid and the continued improvement of sheed and duggan imo. Bring on coniglio or rich pls.

Yep. I posted on a mainboard thread that we are going well with an average performing midfield. If we can take an extra step or two to become a top 4 midfield we are every chance of being in it up to our eyeballs in finals. Player wise...I wonder where Trav Colyer is at? Out now for the year with our favourite injury - foot stress fractures - west aussie, genuine pace and he hits the scoreboard ~1gpg. He could be the kind of (gettable) change up/point of difference we need to break lines when our kicking gets shut down by quality opposition.

Sydney, Hawks and Freo Redux will give us a picture of how we are travelling. Sydney and Freo in particular have midfields that can physically dominate our guys in contested situations. How we continue to evolve our structures to deal with this will be really interesting.

Good point on the goalkicking mids. Worth noting that Shuey has kicked 12 so far and has generally looked dangerous in front of goal. Yeo has kicked 10 and with his contested marking ability, he'll become an excellent goalkicking mid once he improves his set shot.

The big question for me is what happens once Ezy comes back. Does Schofield keep his spot? He'd be very unlucky not to but I'm also not keen on playing him as a third tall - I think we've got the balance right this year with two. So do we swing Gov forward? I'm not sure you can when he's been in AA form in the backline. And as much as I like Brown it's hard to see where he fits into the equation.

I think if everything goes right we've still only got a tiny chance.

We'd need to finish 4th and face Freo, and beat them. Very unlikely IMO. Then beat two of Hawks/swans/Freo in the prelim/gf.

I just hope we can win a final this year. Get some experience.

We have the second youngest oldest player in the league. Finals experience is key.

Pretty surprising that Masten hasn't kicked a goal despite an otherwise very good season.
How often does he actually go deep into the forward line?
He seems to be part of the gang that hang just outside 50 for the defensive bomb out of the backline by the opposition.(Wellingham is part of that gang too and I do sometimes get them mixed up)

Would Coniglio be the x-factor mid to top us off?
Pretty sure him and Treloar are the only ones who haven't re-signed with GWS. With all the other signings GWS will be starting to pay unders you would think.

He's missed a couple of absolute sitters.

Pretty much, we need to avoid what happened to us in 2013 and what has happened to port in 2015.

bodazoka hit it right on the head. This is different to 2011/2012 because we aren't being carried by anyone really. Our improvement as come collectively as a group with 3/4 of the team playing career best seasons. This looks much more promising. But if Simmo can keep the improvement coming, particularly with his "football which will hold together in big games" brand, i think the results will take care of themselves in the future.

Going to be a juggling act next season with players returning from injuries.

I sense we need a mid who has genuine line breaking speed and can consistently damage the opposition on the scoreboard. I do not think it is Coniglio. I was against Yarran but am shifting after discussions with a mate who is starting to convince me he may be the missing part? He is not the best player but his may well be the Bill Parcel's missing element? Possibly!

A good analysis and write up nameless - thanks.
