As a Melbourne living perth raised but very very travelled man, I have spent a lot I time in Adelaide. It all comes down to expectations. If you want a thriving metropolis, to eat out, party, shop, see bands. You'll hate the joint. If you want an oversized country town with all the charm and local feel (which is cool) then you'll love it.

Glenelg is rad. Hahndorf is cool. Victor
harbour in summer is tops. Adelaide had plenty of cool things about it.

But it's a country town. One freeway that only travels in one direction depending on the time of day is pox. The water dead set tastes like arse, as does west end. The nightlife is limited. After you've smashed Glenelg barbecue a few times you realise the eating out options are about as limited as jack newtons ability to clap. And yes there are more bogans than at the Deni ute muster.

But it comes back to your expectations.

Adelaide. You wouldn't wanna live there, but it's rad for a Footy trip.

I'd disagree about the eating options. Adelaide has a very good food/restaurant culture. Sure you don't get your Cutler and Co type restaurants here as the market/population doesn't demand it, but there are a lot of restaurants just a step below, at half the cost. Although I do hear the refurbished Magill Estate is aiming to be the best restaurant in Australia, with prices to match.

I would be looking at education. I worked in Educational Publishing Industry for a while, don't do it, it's very boring, and the amount of foreign students who study here blew my mind. Bearing in mind that they are pay full fees to the university , as well as board, and have you seen the price of KFC these days (stereotyping, I know), these kids are putting a lot of money in local pockets. Rann had it right, amazingly, when he was trying to attract foreign universities to open offshore campus' in Adelaide. TheGre are two good universities in Adelaide and UNISA, there is a massive burgeoning middle class in India and China, who want a better future for their kids than they had. Adelaide is a small town and easy to get around, it's cheaper to live in the all other mainland states, it has a lot of attractions to foreign students.
Very good point. Second tier universities like Deakin and RMIT make a fortune out of overseas student.

Perth/southwest beaches pwn any beaches anywhere in this country
Perth, to an extent. Cottosloe is an awful swimming beach, but then again, so too is another icon in Bondi. The only endearing feature of Albany was the beaches. Perfect.

Meh. Media driven scare mongering. No more risky than going down to Cronulla.
This. The chance of being killed by a shark is minimal. Who goes out further than 70 metres from the shore? How many thousands swim there daily?

Pretty much, except as has been said before, for the food. It doesn't compare to Sydney and Melbourne for a quantity of options, but who would expect it to? I think it would be a whole lot more interesting if the city built up rather than out.

I just came back from Perth, though. If I had not needed to board a plane to get there, I would have sworn I never left Adelaide. It was spooky.
(Better trains and tap water, though)

Meanwhile Adelaide, with its own share of attacks off suburban beaches, escapes with little comparative attention . . .

Why does Adelaide have much smaller buildings than the other large cities? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_buildings_in_Adelaide

People forever playing the "It'll ruin the parklands" card or something?

Perth has better weather, better beaches, the river, hotter chicks and better pubs/bars.

In many ways we don't actually really need them. Not that I'm against them or anything. In fact the city of Adelaide, with it's parklands would be perfect for high density living as there is vast tracks of open parkland at your doorstep. But due to Adelaide's smallish population, and availability of relatively affordable traditional housing, nobody really wants to live in apartments. So as it stands the Parklands are grossly under utilised and in many cases are eyesores, but don't ever encroach on them or the Save the Parklands crowd will be all over you.

I can appreciate some of the post

but the eating out options suggests you haven't actually seen much of Adelaide at all.

to suggest Glenelg is the pinncacle of Adelaide's eateries is like suggesting McDonalds is the ultimate burger joint.

are you talking Glenelg specifically? I apologise I read it as the whole of Adelaide.

If so, well you're probably close - outside the stuff at Holdfast Shores what is there?

not sure if serious... U need to spend a day at Cot beach and a Sunday sesh at the Cott beach hotel.. Weather, beaches as chicks pwn Adelaide.
My impression of Perth beaches is that they always seem very windy. Weather seems to be fairly similar although it probably does get a little colder here and chicks well, all very subjective although with a larger population you probbably have more hotties, but also again probably more dogs.

Any rate you listed Hahndorf, Victor Harbor and some non discript steak house in Glenelg as your must see things to do which kind of leads me to think you don't know shit. Handorf is a shitty faux German town tourist trap, the only good thing about Victor is its proximity to Adelaide and the first tee at the golf course and Adelaide has a very good food/wine culture at far more reasonable prices than you'd find in Perth.

I have nothing against Perth, but Perthite's that come out and say Perth is soooooo much better than Adelaide are quite delusional. Perth is Adelaide, just newer and shinier, less cultured with the waft of new money blowing in with the Fremantle doctor. Good on em.

I don't want It to sound like I do t love Adelaide. I actually live going there! Just saying that it's not Melbourne when you're talking about eating shopping or
Live music, but it does have a laid back charm that Melbourne lacks.

don't get me wrong - you are correct on shopping etc, but eating, you must be joking.

now I realise this comes across as be just beating Adelaides drums, so to give you an understanding of where I'm coming from, I've eaten in top class restaurants in every major city in the country and a many many places around the world - food bills of $400 - $1000 are no unusual for me and the missus - so I am willing top at least try to end restaurants which gives me some basis to make my judgements (I'm no food critic obviously)

Adelaide has some fantastic eateries and some top end ones which are outstanding - don't get me wrong, we don't have the population to sustain Michelin star restaurants but otherwise we are bloody well serviced.
