Freo's biggest stuff up was not winning the first quarter when kicking with the breeze. That's where the game was lost. Another bad start cost us the game. Melbourne came out hard and plain and simply - they wanted it more.
Second quarter was even, third Freo played with a bit of flair and heart. All in all the first three quarters was a fairly even - if see-sawing - game.
But a 2 goal lead at three quarter time was never going to be enough with the wind that was blowing. Then the rain came and it was all over. I sit about 10 rows back, under cover, on the second level just behind the goals at the city end... and I was getting wet form the rain being blown in by the bloody gale. Once that storm came in there was no coming back - and Vardy's run of goals with the wind at his back made it an impossible task.
No score in the final quarter looks - and of course is - pretty p1ss-poor... but try kicking into a gale while the rain is teeming down - any team would have struggled to put any point on the board.
The weather didn't do us however. Credit to Melbourne - they came out and dominated the first quarter, against the breeze - and that's where they set up the win. The storm, the wind - and their quicker adjustment to the conditions - just made it more emphatic.
It's easy for people who just watched it on TV to say Freo were pathetic... and I make no excuses - believe me, as a Freo supporter it wasn't pretty to watch, and to know that your team is about the softest in the league, despite the "obvious" talent that exists within it. But once that storm crossed - any team kicking into it would have struggled.
Anyway - I'm hurting... and probably didn't make a lot of sense wioth all that drivel I just coughed up for you all to read... I just hope that CC and the players are feeling as crappy as the supporters right now. After all we are their raison d'etre.
