Get a price in mind you want for it then take it to a few dealers see if they're willing to get anywhere close, if not then just stick it on Gumtree.

So peoples what do you think is a REASONABLE price to ask a buyer off their advertised price?

A hypothetical using round figures for sillys who cant do Maths.

Lets say its a 2010 model, 30-40K km's and advertised at $20K.

Is asking $18K too low with room to move to $18,500 at $18,750 the last offer.

I reckon $18k is a fair and reasonable offer in that circumstance. About 10% discount is fair enough in the 'not insulting the seller' stakes.

It all depends what else is available, the bargaining position of the seller etc. If you're talking about a Camry or Commodore or something there are plenty of comparable cars around so to sell one quickly you want it to be top quality, low km etc. or you need to sell under the going rate. If you're talking about something rarer you might have less haggling room as there are less available, but then there will be less people looking for that car etc.

No such thing as RWC over here. Keep your rego up to date and you never need to take your car over the pits unless you are yellow-stickered.

Have never bought an unregistered car. Unless it was some kind of project car that had been sitting in a shed for years it's not something I'd look at.

What about sellers who are selling their car unregistered and w/o an rwc? Is it too much to ask em to renew the rego at least?
In Victoria you can't sell a registered car without a RWC. The only way around it is to arrange for the buyer to get the RWC independently and then keep the rego going to sign/lodge the papers later. If you're the seller you'd want to write up a contract or whatever with the buyer to state that they are buying the car regardless and get them to pay up front for it, then it's up to them to follow through with it all.

If you get a message from someone who definitely wants the car and will pay whatever price you asked, but they are out working offshore on a ship somewhere at the moment, it is a scam.
Father in-law had this when he tried to sell his boat, luckily he showed me the email before he started to reply and I looked it up thinking it sounded a bit dodgy

Always low ball the seller to begin with, if they aren't willing to negotiate a bit then they aren't really interested in selling the car.

Same applies for dealers but feel free to be a bit more aggressive
