Well on the qualifiers I got 4 out of 4
biggrin.gif

My tips for the semi's..

Bris d Carl (sentimental choice as I'm a brissy supporter but realistically this is probably going to be a close one.. Leppitsch absolutely closed down the chris grant show last week and if he can do the same job on whitnall it leaves the midfield to fight it out.. Voss & Camporeale are likely to be the hero/villain of the game)

Hawks d Kangas (some say the roo's will bounce back after the slaughtering... i just can't see it happening)

I'm on the other end of the tipping skills that you with just 1 out of 4. For this week, Brisbane to beat Carlton and (get ready to laugh) North to beat Hawthorn. Again, don't put your hard earned on my tips.

4 from 4 (543 points - Dutch, how'd you manage 600???), though I was out by a lazy 100 points in one game
biggrin.gif

My early leanings for this week are Brisbane and Hawthorn, but I want to see the teams before making a definitive selection.

This is the quote from one of the threads last week for my predictions:-
Melbourne to embarass Carlton like in 94and make them wish they hadnt made the finals.
Hawthorn continue to have the wood over Geelong. To win by 2 points with a goal after the siren by Chick.

Brisbane v WB , WB to choke again. They have made the finals 4 years in a row but have onyl won two finals games in that time.

Essendon to bring in the first leg of Kangas losing finals double by getting home by a lazy 10 goals. Sheedy will switch his players around after 1/4 time to try and keep his players and the crowd interested. Mick Martyn to redo his shoulder and Carey to wish he was playing on Jacovich instead.

The Nostril has spoken."

I got 4/4 I was only 65 points out with essendon but for all intents and purposes, the rest of that quote was quite accurate.

The Nostril says for this week:-

Carlton to defeat Brsibane but only becasue of injuries to the Lions. 21-32 pts.

The Kangas to continue their successful campaign and be bundled out of the finals race in straight sets. Hawks by 35 pts.

Should have kept those maramalade tops instead of disgracing the traditional guernsey.

The Nostril has spoken.

i like most others got the perfect 4 as well, but also put a quiet tenner on at the TAB for those same 4 at 5/1.

two weeks in a row ive taken the cash. hehehe.

Us bomber fans are pretty good tipsters, judging by that ladder huh ???

later.

A.

I only got 3 right, bloody Cats let me down again, I don't know how many points because I haven't been able to access the
AFL site yet as it has heavy traffic.
Does anyone know what points I am on?

Hate to brag too much but I got em all

My tips were:

Hawthorn 14.7.91
Geelong 13.12.90

Missed Hawthorn's total by one behind. History seems to give ol' Geelong the shaft in these things.

Essendon 15.21.111
Kangaroos 14.10.94

Essendon winning shocked very few, but I don't think anyone could have predicted what we saw.

Brisbane 12.9.81
W. Bulldogs 11.11.77

Guess I thought the flooding would keep it close.

Carlton 17.13.115
Melbourne 19.10.124

Got the margin right; though I figured there'd be more scoring.

TIPS FOR NEXT WEEK:

Hawthorn 12.8.80
Kangaroos 21.10.136

Think North's got too much pride to play for after the thorough beating they just got.

Brisbane 14.11.95
Carlscum 17.7.109

Essendon draws the Blues (AGAIN), because the footy gods wouldn't let it happen any other way. :P

Well I ****ed up, Only got 2 right (Bloody Blues and Cats, they need to be shot!!)

My tips this week:

Going out on a limb here, Blues to beat Lions

and

Hawks should peck the Kangaroos eyes out!

Got 4. Luckily changed to the Hawks after seeing their squad. Hoping to get another 612 this week. (WTF?)
Much harder tipping round this week though folks. At this stage I'm leaning toward Hawthorn (strictly on a NCNN basis) and Brisbane (on a NKNC basis).

Actually I'm more interested and relieved that Mark Johnston is cleared of any serious shoulder damage and will therefore probably not miss the PF (thank god for the week off).

I let myself down with 3/4 when I really should not have trusted Geelong. I tipped Melbourne mainly because of the comments on BigFooty, so thanks guys. On a positive note, I tipped the exact margin (34 points) of Brisbane’s win over the Bulldogs! I don’t think this gave me any significant gain, though.

Arch, congratulations on your punting success. It’s easy to be a good tipster when your team is the year’s best! My father, a Saints supporter, won the family footy pool in ’97 and ’98 when St. Kilda had reasonable success but hasn’t been close before or since.

Can anyone tell me how the points system works for finals tipping on the AFL website? I couldn’t find an explanation.

This week, I lean towards Brisbane upsetting Carlton, who are struggling at the wrong time of the season. It’s concerning that Brisbane are yet to win a final in Melbourne but there is no better time to start. While terribly unfair to Essendon, in one way it would be nice to see Brisbane carry the non-Victorian flag all the way to the Grand Final, where they meet the premiership-starved Melbourne.

My other intial tip is for the Kangaroos to beat Hawthorn, but this may very well change by the end of the week. Hawthorn don’t seem to play good football two weeks in a row, while the Kangaroos will either rebound ferociously or last week’s mauling will remain imprinted on the team and they will be humilated again.

Dan,
some of the tips ive been most proud of this year:

stK to beat Geelong

Port to beat Carlton

Hawks to beat the Dogs

and although not quite as "correct" I was proud to not tip collingwood once in the entire 22 rounds.

My tips above are based on my "theory of AFL relativity", which has netted me about $150 odd in the last 4-5 weeks. If only id devised it earlier in the year huh ??

Just one question for all you stats freaks

Has any team ever won the week after a 20 goal drubbing ? finals or otherwise.

I remember a Dunstall and Langford - less Hawthorn took a similar beating from North of all teams in 1994. It took two losses to recover before beating the eventual premier, West Coast in Perth.

It was probably an end of an era for Hawthorn, could it be the same for North. They still have some handy young players but in the mid nineties Hawthorn lost stars due to financial pressures.

And on the subject of revenge, that 1994 game was Nick Hollands first senior game. I hope He and 'Crawf' remember it well.

Got 3 out of 4. Guess who I missed on!

Picked Melbourne by 3 points - was barracking for Carlton in the last minute

Essendon by 27 points - only 98 off there!

Geelong by 9 - Doh!

Brisbane by 42 - missed by 8 points.

Not a bad first week

This week - Hwthorn to beat North (as Geelong would have had we beaten the Hawks)

Carlton to beat Brisbane - Too good a team to play two bad finals, at home in a row

Pessimistic,

In 1992, Hawthorn defeated Essendon by 160 points.

The next week, we somehow recovered to beat Melbourne.

In 1987, Sydney Swans defeated Essendon by 163 points (236-73). The next week, Essendon had to play "top of the ladder" Carlton, who went on to win the Grand Final. Essendon lost by one point.

In 1983, one of the most remarkable matches ever too place. North Melbourne, who would finish on top of the ladder lost to Fitzroy by 150 points ! Remember, North finished on top. How can a team which finished on top lose a match by 150 points ? Well, anyway, one of the Kangaroos 6 losses in the Home and away season of 1983 was by 150 points, and they recovered to beat Sydney the next week.

So it can and does happen. Regularly

Daniel- About the scoring system, I think it works like this....

1. If you get it wrong, you get zero (obviously!)

2. If you get the winner right, you get 100 points.

3. You're then given another 100 points if the margin is EXACT, but lose 4 for every point above or below the actual margin....
confused.gif

So if you tipped Melbourne by 9, you'd get 200 points. If you tipped Melbourne by 12, you'd get 188 points, and if you tipped Carlton (as some of us did!), you'd get nothing.

Hope that helps
smile.gif

BTW, if your margin is either 50 or 25 points away from the actual margin, you only get the original 100 points.

Thanks, Dan24. For the reply

Looks like the Hawks will need to be on their toes. Perhaps the Roos (let's say didn't lose any sleep over the prospect of) losing first up to essendon, then perhaps try to get in what people are now calling the 'soft' side of the draw.

If so perhaps it all got out of hand when the Bombers came out so convincingly and made it a 20 goal margin

Watch out Hawks !

Funny how Inside football has based its Roos to win prediction basically on the 'rebound' factor - they normally are more thorough than that.

My syuspicion is that the roos cannot now match the Hawks at either end, so if the midfield breaks even or goes the hawks way, and They don't jump the hawks while they settle, then Hawks will prevail.

Picked 3 out of 4 last week.
Essendon to defeat North
Brisbane to defeat Western Bulldogs
Melbourne to defeat Carlton

Lost out on Geelong defeating Hawthorn.

My stab at predicting winners this week:
Heart says Brisbane. Head says Carlton defeating Brisbane (narrowly).

Asssuming Carey is out, Hawthorn to defeat North Melbourne. If Carey plays and he is fit..will go the other way. Again whichever way it goes will be close.

Hawthorn and Carlton both by around 10-30 both benefitting from key injuries in their opponents camps.

Anything can happen though. Very tough tipping round this.

North to beat the pretty boys at Hawthorn cos guys like Dixon,Harford etc dont like it hard. Carlton to defeat Brisbane mainly cos
Matthews and Ashcroft were mouthing off how stuffed and slow Carlton are..dumb move which will only fire Carlton up.

Go Roos

Thanks for explaining that, Eagle_Fan. I must have saved myself somewhat by getting the Brisbane margin right.
