So I was wondering how will it start off. Will there be heaps of Deals 1st Up or will be quiet for sometime before anything is done?

Hypothetical: Just say Cloke decides to leave Collingwood and he has two offers: 1 from Carlton at $700k per year (plus unofficial brown paper bags of course but they are not counted) and one from Freo at 1.1mill per year.

He chooses Carlton cos he wants to play with Malthouse. Collingwood match the offer (minus the brown paper bags).
Cloke would probably rather take the Freo offer than go back to Collingwood but once the Pies have matched his first choice offer, he cannot try his second choice.

So the player gets only one shot at FA.

I thought they could offer a larger deal, say Collingwood match Carltons offer, Carlton can then go back and offer a larger deal.

Some of the smaller deals will happen quite early in the first couple of days.

A lot of the big fish will take longer, particularly the restricted ones, as they choose between different offers and guage how likely their current club is to match.

Then we'll probably see a flurry towards the end, particularly as clubs that lose free agents then look to get in replacements.

Agree that Chaplin and Rivers will be done quickly, most likely followed by Knights and Moloney. The rest will trickle out before a rush, like trade week. Should be a bit of fun.

I'd like some exact clarification on FA rules too - I was also under the impression that if say (like above) Carlton offered Cloke 700k and Collingwood matched, then Carlton could go higher but Cloke couldn't try his hand on the Freo deal.

Go to PSD and nominate 1.1 mill for 5 years. Doubt anyone would take him before then. It's a lot of coin.

Where did you get that From?

Heard a rumour, it's not very likely, and only will have any chance of happening if Cloke resigns with Collingwood. I don't know the destination that he would go. That ones really a guess

Clarification of the rule is the player has to state which offer he is going to accept.

For instance Cloke says out of the 2 offers from Carlton and Freo i choose the Blues offer, he then can't go back on it if the Pies match it.
So its still basically left to the player to choose, but knowing full well if he does want to leave he has to be sure to take an offer he doesn't think his club could match

A player generally only wants to leave for the money/contract length unless it is geographical or success based. Cloke would probably want to stay at Collingwood for the maximum coin possible, he wouldn't want to make sure that they can't match it due to only one shot.

If he wanted out for other reasons, he just needs to tell the club and they shop him round like before free agency came about or start making plans without him and get the compo. Why would you want someone playing for you who didn't want to be there?

Most players by day one will know who they want to nominate and at what price. So you'd think that by day 3-4 a lot should be happening. It's not going to be like trade week because there is no "advantage" to holding out to the very end.
