We are but weeks away from the beginning of another glorious campaign. We've had a few retirements and exits since we made all and sundry EAD on September 29, 2018. So if we look at our best side from 2018, there are some definite outs: LeCras, Lycett, Gaff, Cripps. And I guess question marks over Kennedy and Venables? I'd like Schofield to hold his spot after his GF but he might also be swapped out if Sheppard is deemed a direct replacement.

With all that in mind, how will we line up on March 23 against the Lions?

B: Sheppard Barrass Duggan
HB: Hurn McGovern Cole
C: Masten Yeo Jetta
HF: Rioli Darling Petruccelle
F: Ryan Kennedy Allen
R: Vardy Redden Shuey
Int: Hickey Hutchings Sheed Smith

Anyone want to push the boat out and suggest some zany inclusions?

At this time last year the consensus for Round 1 was the following:
  • Masten would never play a senior game ever again.
  • Darling couldn't take a mark at all to save his career.
  • Yeo was a defender, not a midfielder.
  • Redden was a wasted trade of a first round draft pick.
  • Jetta was a poor exchange for Sinclair and would see out his contract at East Perth.
  • Lecras should have retired already.
  • Hurn was questionable as captain.
  • Duggan was on the verge of becoming a drafting failure.
  • There was also next to zero chance of Naitanui being available.

And that doesn't even take into consideration that the club ended up playing three debutants in the same game for the first time in 22 years.

Maybe we should see how JLT goes first and then revisit this.

Yep, given the way the first few AFL games kicked off last season, with
new players etc, and our current injuries, I would be wanting to see the JLT first.
But would imagine any of the new and/or young usual suspects will be thereabouts
in the first few games ...
some good calls in above posts..finally, almost footy time again!!!

If everyone was fit and available I’d just say:
Gaff for LeCras
Shep for Schoey/Cole
Hickey for Lycett

Based on that and the potential outs:
Petrucelle for Cripps
Smith for Gaff
Allen for Kennedy if need be

Be interesting if we decided to go with O. Allen as our second ruck, instead of Hickey.
Know something we dont?

Can't see Venables not getting a game after he was promoted heavily last year.

From the grand final team which was our best team available:
+Waterman was good last year
+Hickey ruck merry go 'round

+Ah Chee
+Nelson
+Josh Smith
+Brander
+Petrucelle

-Lecras (retired)
-Lycett (traded)
-Venables(injured)
-Kennedy (injured)?
-cripps (injured)

I dont see any of the latest draftees getting a gig.

Venables is working his way back from injury if I'm not mistaken. Would be behind a couple of the other viable alternatives as far as fitness goes.

Id be surprised if Kennedy plays first round simply for the fact it is in Brisbane. I feel they will try to manage his air time and that is a 10hr return trip to start the year.
Would not be surprised to see Brander take his spot for that game along side O Allen for Lecca. Would be fantasitc to see those 2 in tandem in the forward line. I think Waterman would have been first in line for Lecras replacement but some injury setbacks might have pushed him out.
Smith and Petro both looking likely for game 1 at this stage.

A lot of water to go under the bridge first though- lets see how the 2 JLT games go.

if kennedy doesnt come up, would Gov play forward thus enabling schoey to play down back?

I imagine they'd pick Brander or Waterman?

I agree, Gov's more recent forays forward have put to rest any lingering thoughts as to whether he should be swung forward or not. With an exception of that Port Adelaide game from last year of course :D

More to the point, we've got a bunch of young tall forwards we should be pushing through. The aim should be to get Waterman, Allen and Brander to roughly where Barrass is now in terms of experience by the time Kennedy finishes. That's about 50 games. Not sure we'll quite manage that but the closer, the better.
