How would live pick trading work?

Perhaps a player they were really keen on already got drafted.

Think that's probably right.

Club A holds picks 20 and 50, Club B holds picks 30 and 40.

Player club A wanted at 20 is gone, but is interested in a couple of players in the 30-40 range.

Trades it's pick 20 to Club B for picks 30 and 40, Club B moves up the draft a little

As if it isnt long enough already.

In the NBA they've got salary dumps, and players can be traded without their consent.

We are a while away from live draft day trading I feel, we want to preserve how special the draft is for many of these kids. Live draft day trading marginalises the magnitude of such an event for the kids I feel.

This is professional sport, no time for the ego's of 18 year olds.

Live pick trading is a great great idea.

So many times a player has probably slid and a team if they knew he would have been there at pick 20 would have traded for him..

Teams cannot trade into a pick on a slight hunch if it may be overpaying if they wouldn't pay that much for others in that range.

My understanding is they will accept live pick trading as it doesn't involve any players being traded that are already on a roster.

So how would live pick trading work? Why would a club trade picks during the draft that they wouldnt have already done in the trade period?

Clubs may not trade some picks in trade period now though, if they know they can do it later.
In some ways it may make the trade period more boring as the clubs hold cards closer to their chest in terms of what picks they willing to trade around on draft night but at present clubs will swap draft picks in trade period which makes it easier for players to move to clubs they want to get to.

Example: Carlton was willing to trade pick 16 to Dogs which released the dead lock of Stringer getting to Essendon because Dons were not giving a pick from 1st round to Dogs but two picks in the 20's. Carlton wanted to get Kennedy from GWS but pick 16 overs to do that so they swap with Dogs to get a pick 28 and 30 off them, give Dogs 16, Dogs take the two picks from Dons for Stringer and Stringer gets to Dons, Carlton give 28 to GWS for Kennedy and then Dogs also trade two picks for Schache to help him move clubs too.
Now if clubs know trading of picks can happen on draft night, maybe Stringer is still stuck with Dogs, Schache still stuck with Lions and who knows what happens with Kennedy, maybe he goes into the draft pool himself for the night or pre-season draft.
But at present with all trading closed at certain point it makes the final day of trading period actually interesting now.

This proposed change seems to be to steal some of that movement of draft picks to only be revolving around the 18 year olds on draft night.
All done to turn it into a television event. TV stations once again becoming the driving force of ideas rather than the game itself. The game adapting to suit ratings, not tv covering the game. The tail wagging the dog.

A few reasons.
The player they wanted got drafted so they're happy to go lower and get multiple picks.

or

The player they didnt think that would slip to pick x is available at pick x so they trade for it to get that player.

Other permutations could occur if the rules are changed.
Obviously right now they cant trade for players at that time, but if trading of live picks became available then players must be involved too.
