Totally in favour of Tassie in the AFL and I think it can be done. Here's the financial challenge though....Currently the Tas Govt sponsors the AFL (via Hawthorn and North)...by all reports this is a Win-Win financially for all concerned.

Clearly the AFL aren't going to relinquish this money.....and the AFL bargaining chip is that they control the fixture....and hence dictate which matches are played in Tassie.

To me the powers that be behind a Tassie team will have to, at least in the short term, continue to sponsor the AFL the same some of money whilst they get the Tassie team off the ground....and then show that a team from Tassie in the AFL is a major asset to the game. Question is how can this be done ?

Not sure about North's arrangement, but Hawthorn's arrangement is direct with Tourism Tasmania.

I'd say this will be the last contract.

No more teams, mediocrity is the norm for far too many AFL listed players.

Too many teams in Melbourne on AFL support already strip one of its licence & merge its support base with another (see Fri night footy North v Saints) - give Tas a licence.

When Fri night footy in Melbourne cant pull a crowd its time ..... simply send the AFL support package to Tas,
easy peasy !!

Totally agree in good time hopefully they will relocate one of them to Tassie.

Too many teams in Vic, so let's replace one with a smaller, weaker team in Tas even though it will drive over a hundred thousand people away from the game...

You'll accept anything so long as it goes along with your 'Kick a Vic' goal, wont you?

They need to change the funding model to show a Tas team is viable.

Most of the current sponsors (Tas Government, through Tourism Tas, TT lines, etc) mostly do it because it generates tourism because if they don't pay, they get no games, and thus lose the tourist money. If the AFL gave them a full time team, they would get the tourist money, (indeed, noticeably more than they currently do) regardless, so why would they continue to pay?

If they can generate local sponsors that would hang around regardless, or even promises to support a Tas team that get somewhere near the levels required (ultimately around $10Million/year, but a significant fraction of that would probably suffice as a show of intent) then it would make the AFL consider them more seriously.

For fans...Stop going to games, but not entirely...Either go the the venues and have a party in the carpark during the game to show that you will turn out, just not as things stand...if there are more people in the carpark than in the ground, again the AFL will take note. Alternatively (and probably better for Tas football), go to TSL games instead! Yeah, it'd be a bit tougher to show it's a boycott, but it would help the local game.

Apparently North are set to play a lot more matches in Tassie esp if the Hawks deal is not continued North could split games between Launceston and Hobart.
Maybe they could eventually morph into the Tassie team a lot of people dream of!Tassie Roos anyone?

IF you deny the oversupply of footy in the Melbourne market just check out last Friday nights marquee game.
Tasmanian taxpayer money subsidising Melbourne teams ...

It will be a legitimate option when North slide down the ladder for a few seasons then it can be looked as a revival of sorts as outlined by Hutchy on Footy classified works for both Tassie and North.

A topic that comes up about 3 times a season and won't be relevant for another 5 years.

Tassie should start with a state side in the VFL & AFLW leagues in 2018, and gradually grow from there.

If the North/South people and corporates can align behind these sides, then a good base will be in place.

If this can't be achieved, then anything else is pointless.

Agree , Telsor you make some great points......somehow a significant financial committment has to be made by Tasmanian footy fans, businesses or even footy fans of other clubs to form a Tassie club that transcends the Tamanian Govt sponsorship of AFL clubs that currently exist. Then do a deal with the AFL.

Be a recipe for failure ... people don't just follow the gospel according to Gil.

How many Taswegians are members of the Hawks &/or North?

Tassie had a VFL side and it blew the Vic sides away in terms of attendance (11k for a semi final). Eventually, they got aligned with North Melbourne and become almost exclusively a Hobart side and the Devils folded. When you read about it, it sounds like deliberate sabotage considering it was a goldmine for Tassie football and the *ups that ensued where so obvious in that it would cause massive problems (North alignment, Hobart exclusive).

I agree with your post though and think that if Tassie can have a united VFL, AFLW and TAC Cup side then it would work wonders for them.

Agree, you need a focus for membership... ? Could you start an AFL Membership in Tassie which admitted to all Hawthorn and North and AFLW games in Tassie then grow that....I know it's radical because this also helps North and Hawthorn in the interim but you build a group who are financial and then can lobby on behalf of having an AFL team in Tassie....

By what measure was it a goldmine for Tassie football ??

In fact I wonder if we know how many Tasmanians are paid up members of any AFL clubs or other footy clubs....that would provide a basis of (at the very least) how many members a Tasmanian AFL team would have.....you could probably double or treble that number to get close to the real potential of an AFL Tassie membership.

The bigger question is how much money they'd raise.

The vast majority would only be limited game members after all (assuming 6 game in Hobart, 5 in Launceston) and there would be very few premium memberships due to the lack of facilities for premium members.

There is also the issue of ground capacity.
