When you look at the games we have lost this year you may have noticed that one/two of these players were missing:
Howe and Frampton

GWS loss: Frampton
Geelong loss: Howe
Suns loss: Frampton, Howe out around half time
Freo loss: Frampton and Howe

You can also add Houston as missing for three of those games (excluding Geelong game)

I think this highlights one big issue we have. If one of our key backs goes down we just don’t have a proper replacement and it affects our structure. As we all know the chances of not having any more injuries for rest of the year is near impossible, so surely there should be a backup plan just in case one gets injured again.

My question is, who do we have that can play a Frampton/ Howe role? We have seen Dean cannot play as second key backman, and McStay is so important as a forward/ruck for us

I agree with this but some of the examples cited don't necessarily prove the rule. We lost the GWS in round 1 because we were torched in the midfield so Frampton would not have changed things much. Hogan did not even play for them. Against the Cats we were in control for large sections of that match and had Crisp kicked straight we win. Against the GC, we kicked poorly until half time and when Howe went off at this break, we came back and played better so the backline was not the issue. We held their key forwards and Moore got coaches votes which means the defence stood up well enough. Against Freo is the best case but we had Frampton, Howe and Houston out which is half of the normal structure. And you might also add that being without Membrey was pretty costly to our forward line. Howe was missing against Freo when we took a depleted lineup over there off a 5 day break and we won. There are a lot of factors when analysing our losses I think.

Why are Howe and Frampton being lumped in together?

Howe is far more important than big Billy.

It’s like comparing the importance of your lungs with your piggy toe.
Haha, very good point. Although in saying that, it still affects the backline structure to the detriment of Moore and Howe when they have to take a stronger/bigger key forward that Frampton would usually take. Thus impacting backline ability to intercept mark and thus score off of intercept marking, which Collingwood relies a lot on. They may not be of the same skill level, sure, but Frampton allows Moore and Howe to play better games it could be argued

yeah its why i wanted to pick up Tomlinson, i think he would have been much better than Dean at filling in now.

12-2 with Houston, 2-2 without Houston this season

It's a deceiving stat, as I don't think he has really contributed much in our wins, nor his absence been the reason we lost.

In my opinion he has been a bit 'non impact', and we really need him to lift from here. Now is the time.

You know what else?
Sully didn't play against GWS or Geelong, not that that has anything to do with Frampton or Howe but it is interesting. :)

Sully isn’t best 26 let alone best 23
Has nothing to do with team success whether he was in or out and stats are below par.. he tackles ok but there’s not much more
If Schultz Beau and Bobby hadn’t missed games he wouldn’t have got a game and we win nearly all three of those games

Names are irrelevant.
This won't be popular but it's obvious af.

Anyone who frees Moore from the responsibility of being accountable is important.
Do you seriously watch our games and think to yourself Moore plays without accountability?

Some of these links are a bit tenuous to me. We got back into the GC game after Howe went down, and Billy wouldn't have stopped what GWS did to us. Teams have done better against our defensive structure recently, which I'm sure Fly & Roughy have gotten to work on
We got back into the game and would have won it if he was in there. Tenuous or not, Howe and Frampton are so important to our team structure. As seen tonight the flow on affect is huge with them missing

Just got to get the back six band together against Hawthorn and pretend the season starts again. We looked leaky and clueless tonight.

The Dean curse is real. We do not beat Top 8 teams when Dean plays.
More that we miss Howe; defensively, in terms of rebound, and as an on-field coach.

Heaven knows how we nearly beat Geelong without him.

Yet our depleted team beat Freo over there without him. Howe makes a difference but if our midfield keeps getting smashed he cannot help us as much as we all think. Look what happened to Sam Taylor the best defender in the AFL against the Dogs when the ball kept going in there. And in this scenario they may keep getting 6 goals kicked on them like Moore etc.

Nah, I'm just imagining it
