You are conflating two issues. I explained the no significant fault defense above. The Cronulla team did not rely on this defense, but rather provided substantial assistance to ASADA in their investigation. Under the AFL Anti-Doping Code, when a player “has provided substantial assistance to the AFL, Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority, or another anti-doping organisation which results in that organisation discovering or establishing an anti-doping rule violation by another”, then the two years ban may be reduced by a maximum of 75%.
The Essendon players chose to drag this out to the CAS determination stage, which is why they didn't get the benefit of that discount.
