There was a match in the Davis Cup between Ivo Karlovic and Radek Stepanek last night which went for 5 hours and 59 minutes.

No break of serve from either player until the 30th game of the 5th set.

Game finished 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (2-7) 16-14. That's amazing. Adding to that, Karlovic smashed his world record of 55 aces by racking up a tally of 78.

Karlovic= 1 show pony.

You had to feel though there was probably only 1 winner if it got to the 5th set. Stepanek better returner. But good game nevertheless.

Well, at least he's been good enough to capatalise on his 1 trick, unlike gooch...

I tell you people what's even crazier than this, Israel in the SF of a Davis Cup. Seriously what is the world coming to?? Israel are ****ing doing better than us :D:mad:

Hilraious rueslt, pity i wasn't able to watch any of that epic. I'm sure Steps had a nice reaction

Yeah, it's unusual, they do have a good doubles pair, freak results can always happen in Davis Cup. Even though playing Spain in Spain on clay is impossible.

Looks like India will qualify for the main group after we didn't play that tie a few months back, golden chance had of we got to play South Africa :(

Then the next match also went for about 4 hours? The spectators really got their money's worth of tennis ...
Wasn't there that Davis Cup tie against Switzerland where Hewitt and Federer had that epic and then the scud had a really long match as well? I remember it because it was one of the only times that channel 7 have stayed with sport instead of going to the news. I could be wrong though.

Think you might thinking of the tie with Spain in the final, after the Hewitt/Federer match there was a dead rubber in the Switerzland tie, the only reason it was late it started at 3.

With the tie against Spain, during the first day Hewitt won in 5 and then the Scud lost in 4 to Moya, remember that went to about 7 or 8

Czech plays Spain in the final, a shame that is being played in Spain. :(

Err. I was too exhausted after Fed v Hewitt to remember much of what happened afterwards. :p It would've been a tie towards the end of 2003, if you want to look it up?

EDIT: Also, can we have another DC tie in Melbourne please?

I actually watched this game while I was waiting for a local plumber to come fix my bathroom. I think that people dont actually really understand the whole bit of the Davis Cup, listening to the fans go batshit after everypoint and the sweat on the face of the players playing for their country. Was great to watch purely from a contest and about one winner from the 5th set on, I think you are forgetting that Karlovic had I think 4 match points throughout the match. About the second game of the tie, Cilic went down as well in something resembling 4 hours, so nearly 10 hours of tennis in two matches... wow...

Israel just had a relatively easy run and Sela jagged a few wins IIRC in their other ties, though they did beat Russia which is a result within itself...

Ahhh yes, the famous Hewitt comeback in the 2003 Semi Final. That was an epic match! Two sets down and Fed serving for the match IIRC, then Lleyton dug in and ended up breaking Federer in half in the last set :thumbsu: :D

Sadly...he has never looked like beating Federer since that day, he must have taken that loss rather personally
