Stats say otherwise, but the quaiity of bowling probably better (eg: Ambrose).

Did Taylor bat more with Boon or Slats?

Stats no issue. Taylor and Boon faced the better attacks. If Boon was playing now, he'd average 50+ easily.

Boon regularly faced- Ambrose, Walsh, Bishop, Patterson, Wasim, Waqar, Imran, Hadlee etc. Bowling has rarely been stronger across the world than it was in Boon's era.

Boon switched between opening (49 times) and batting at #3 (66 times).

Was better as an opener, but worked at 3 behind Taylor and Marsh, and then Taylor and Slater.

One of the toughest bastards to play test cricket, ever.

Yeh, nah

Langer/Hayden far more technically and physically superior. Hayden would of destroyed any attack....not at a strike rate of 40 either...

I call crap on Hayden. Biggest flat track/fairweather bully ever. Initially couldn't cut it against Donald and DeVilliers, Ambrose and Walsh... had to wait for the retirements of Slater, Taylor, Elliott to break in to the team, and by then all the real threatening quicks were gone.

Finally made his "breakthrough" innings against Srinath and Agarkar (lol) after years in the wilderness. Then spent a few years smashing crappy pop-gun pace attacks around.

Rarely went big against a good pace attack.

he didn't get them rock hard guts playing hackeysack!!!

also, been looking on youtube tonight just randomly and found these. they certainly got as much out of cmon aussie cmon as they could..

Pretty impressed with Part 1 last night. Got 2 million viewers apparently.

Some of the actors looked uncannily like the real life people they were playing, or at least how they looked at the time.

I still probably preferred Rob Carlton's version of Packer in 'Paper Giants' but Lachy Hulme is pretty good too. What a tyrant Packer is! If half the stuff on that show is true he would've been one scary character to deal with.

I got into the members at the AJC one day, which I think coincided with KP's last ever day at the track. I got a bit lost and got into an area I wasn't supposed to.

I was following a group of people that included the Ingham brothers, Jack and Bob, then the biggest players in racing in Australia, low and behold out of the lift enters Big Kerry, he storms out past the Inghams and says; "G'day Chickens!" and left - that was it.

Internally I was going beserk, it was one of those you had to be there moments and I could not believe that I was.

Loved the show....wish I was old enough to have been part of that era.

Love how strong Packer was portrayed and would have hated to be on his bad side.

Just asking to those who can remember. During WSC, Allan Border made his debut for Australia in Tests. Obviously, he would've been thereabouts in Sheffield Shield to make the team. But, what I want to ask is, was he an obvious pick? Was he a guy who everyone was saying "This guy will definitely play for Australia one day", even if WSC hadn't occurred?

He would have got there eventually, but probably would have taken longer. Same with Kim Hughes and Rodney Hogg.

Hughes was picked for the 77 England tour prior to WSC, so WSC didn't really hasten his debut.

I'm not a huge Christian Ryan fan after an indulgent little piece he wrote about Brad Haddin keeping in a helmet, however "Golden Boy" is a good read and tells the Kim Hughes strory in depth. He was a real victim in all this and it had a massive impact on him.

The best innings I have ever seen (i've seen a few) was Hughes v the Windies at the MCG on a horror track. Ian Chappell rates it and he doesn't rate Kim Hughes so I consider it high praise indeed.

Reading Golden Boy you don't get much about Ian Chappell regarding Hughes, and really his playing days were largely over by the team Hughes was a regular member. I definitely did lose respect for Rod Marsh, just so unprofessional and childish, and actually Greg Chappell too. He was in charge of the bowl of fruit and nuts and pretty much let Lillee and Marsh do as they please.

Couldn't agree more about the innings Hughes played at the MCG. I was only a kid but remember being awestruck. His double hundred against India in Adelaide wasn't bad either.

I was only a kid as well and it was my first day at a Test, doubt it will ever be beaten, Hughes 100 followed by Viv chopping the last ball of the day to leave them at 4/10 - it had it all. Ian Chappell had a thing on Cricinfo recently which revived my memory of Hughes innings.

Some people can't tolerate Chappell but I reckon he's pretty fair - he gives credit where it's due. He's seen an awful lot of test centuries and to put Hughes' one at number 4 is pretty impressive. There's a lot of so called "great" batsmen since that I doubt would have lasted a few overs that day against that attack.

made his breakthrough in a series Australia lost and batsman collapsed around him.

Boon was good but he averaged the most against England, New Zeland and India.

If he played now i think his stats would be around the same as Langer.

thought i'd bump this , with the retirement of m.hussey.

we've only played 5 tests since and i wonder if anyone has now changed their mind and can fit m.hussey into our best test XI since the end of WSC.

i still have him in there but m.clarke is certainly now mounting a case (he's still in my 2nd XI - but pressing)

Hussey in a best test XI Australia's had since WSC? No way, sorry. Too many ahead of him.

Can I add Bruce Reid if he hadnt broken down. sob.

Chappelli had his problems with Hughes when Hughes was captain and Chappelli was doing interviews with the captains at Channel 9. Hughes at one point refused to speak to Chappelli. Good to see that Chappelli can put that aside when looking at top innnings.
