What a fantastic win there for Fernando Alonso. His 1st win and the youngest ever F1 driver to win a race. He drove well all day and finished about 20 seconds ahead of Kimi Raikkonen. 3rd was Montoya, 4th Ralf Schumacher who had a spin on the 1st lap and went to last, 5th To David Coulthard who was the only Driver to do a 2 stop strategy I think. 6th was Aussie Mark Webber who did well. 7th Jarno Trulli and 8th 5 time world champion Michael Schumacher. Rubens Barrichello had a complete suspension failure in what was a really weird retirement.

Pretty good Race and the championship very close now. MS ahead of Kimi and JPM by just 2 points.

Considering the power of the Williams car they would have to be very confident of a victory in Monza. I am going for Kimi Raikkonen but I think Montoya will probably do it.

Fernando Alonso ran a brilliant race but was helped tremendously by a slow Webber holding up all the cars for the first stint. Webber ran a good race and he was probably unlucky not to have finished 5th or even 4th.

Also did you hear Villeneuve's comments when he retired? Obviously extremely frustrated at BAR, but I don't think any other teams would really take him.

Cracking race by Alonso. In three-four years time when Michael, David, etc. are retired it's going to be a great battle between Alonso and Raikkonen. Montoya as well.

Well the problem with Barrichello was said not be be a suspension failure. Anyway Michael Schumacher doesn't deserve to win this Championship. Raikkonen has had some bad luck like his engine blowing up in Nuburgring assuming he didn't retire add 10 points to his total and in Germany when he was knocked off by Ralf. I would say at least 5 points in that race. MS had a tyre blow up when in 2nd. He ended up coming 7th so add 6 points to his total. Kimi Would have about a 7 or 8 point championship lead.

Williams seem to have the Constructors Championship won already. Mclaren may get ahead of Ferrari.

Kimi had a very good finish yet again. He's having a ripper of a season. Very happy McLaren man.

Credit to Alonso though, he was sublime.

Great drive by Alonso, absolutely dominated from go to whoa, well deserved win! Webber drove a very good race, was unlucky to fall to 6th with Coulthard 2 stopping but he showed he can mix it with the best. A bit more speed from the R4 and he could've been on the podium. JPM was very lucky his little spin didn't cost him, Ralf drove an absolute stormer, both could've won but for their shocking starts. KR drove another very solid race, I think he will have to win another race if he's to win the title though. M. Schumacher is in trouble, the Bridgestones are way off the pace at the moment and this weekend he couldn't even keep up with Rubens. I expect Monza will suit the Michelin runners again and if McLaren, Williams, Renault & Jaguar can be running in the top 10 it will make life tough for Ferrari. With 2 points between the top 3 drivers, 8 different winners this season, 5 teams winning Grands Prix, improvements from midfield runners, some tight close racing with quite a bit of overtaking this is proving to be the best F1 season for years. The rule changes are obviously working. Can't wait for Monza!!!

I dont think the rule changes have done anything except make Qualifying abit more interesting. I think Michelin hugely improving is the reason why mclaren and williams have caught and passed Ferrari but I dont think its all tyress. No doubt that Mclaren and Williams have improved. Wouldnt it be great if a Williams or Mclaren won the next race in Monza in front of the "Tifosi"!

The points system hasn't changed it around too much. I saw on another site, didn't check to see if it was correct mind you, but under the old points system, the championship would look like:

Schumacher 55 points
Montoya 55 points
Raikkonen 53 points

So basically Montoya gains 1 point, not a huge difference.

What happens if the championship is tied at the end of the year? I guess it comes down to who won the most races?

Michelin have made a HUGE difference this season. The top 7 places in Hungary were all Michelin. Williams have been the biggest improvers with clearly the best car this season, and would be pretty disappointed they didn't do better than 3rd and 4th at Hungary. Renault also has come along in leaps and bounds, and Alonso can definitely thank Weber for slowing down the pack in the 1st 12 laps, which basically set him up for the win. Rubens & Firman both had amazing wipeouts and can thank their lucky stars they are still alive and walking, cos both accidents could have had a lot worse outcomes. And it was the cocky Montoya's turn for lady luck to shine on him after that amazing stuff up he made 9 laps out, which Ralphy just missed out on capitalising on.

We haven't had a Driver's Championship so close for a very long time. And with 8 different winners so far this season, you can't say that a particular driver deserves the championship more than anyone else. The focus this season has been to finish races with more of a points spread on offer, so it will be interesting to see who tightens up in the last 3 races, and who takes the bit between the teeth and goes for it.

Has McLaren peaked as a team? They just cannot seem to get a great win in the current (last year) car. Kimi is racing extremely well but cannot seem to get the edge he needs to beat the others. Maybe it is only because it's the old car not the one they had hoped to use?

How good would Webber be in a Ferrari??!! or even a Williams/McLaren?!

Racing for the future looks great at the moment:

Ralf S, JPM, Alonso & Webber. Some of the others also look reasonable as 2nd tier racers. All bodes well for the next few years IMO!

McLaren hasn't peaked as a team, Kimi has been up there and will for many of years to come. I have noticed this year that DC has sort of been the test driver, as in quiet a few times he has been on two stoppers and the rest of the field 3. McLaren just seem to be trying new things with DC and they haven't quiet paid off. When he starts from around 10-12th where he usually starts he usually works his way up the grid quiet comfortably. Has anyone else noticed this or am I fooling myself ???
