personally I think Hurn is a better player now, and if I had pick 1 I would probly pick Hurn, having said that Murphy probly has a bigger upside. Both very good players and IMO both much much better than Ellis.

Hurn is as good now as he will ever be.. Virtually no upside and this is coming from someone very high up at centrals..

At their current age it is difficult to tell who will be the better player but from a Carlton point of view, Murphy will definitely not make it to Pick 4 while Hurn might make it to Pick 4 so therefore Murphy should be the no1 pick.

Look at it this way.

Compare the time each spent in the midfield at the U 18 cahmpionships.
Murphy played 4 quarters in each of the 3 matches in the midfield.
Hurn had a couple of short runs in the midfield.

Where does Hurn play nearly all his footy for Centrals? Deep backline, as a fantastic reactionary backman reading the play. Has had a couple of other cameos in the middle or on the wing, which looked great but other players who aren't of AFL standard fitness had already played out a half or 3 quarters of football.

Murphy is mobile and demonstrates his skills on the move, while Hurn is not mobile and demonstrates his skills from a stationary contest for a disputed ball, even nathan jones has this aspect over Hurn.

I don't doubt Hurn is capable of having a very good career over ten years, but if he becomes anything more than a poorer man's Nathan Buckley, I'll be proven wrong. Having said that a poorer man's nathan Buckley is probably better than seventy percent of AFL players.

Thats a very interesting analogy. Who do you think will pick up Hurn?

I'm guessing he'll be picked up somewhere in the 3-6 pick range. It really depends on whether the Hawks are genuine in their interest in acquiring ruck talent (Ryder) for the future and whether or not Carlton and Collingwood want a mix of midfielders (Murphy and Ellis) and KPs (Kennedy and Clarke) with their early picks.

Mick Malthouse said Collingwood are after midfielders and tall defenders. If Collingwood recruit to those guidelines you would have to say for pick 2 & 5 they'd have to rate the midfielders - Ellis, Hurn, Jones, Swallow, no tall defenders would be worth Pick 2 or 5. Personally I think Collingwood's decision will come down to the improvement they see in Ellis and Hurn, and importantly the medicals of each player, especially Hurn who has had op. Personally I think Hurn has a greater chance of developing into an inside midfielder, albeit not a fast one, than Ellis. So maybe Hurn over Ellis, I think Collingwood would be hoping Jones is still available at Pick 5. Hurn and jones are two similar types that fit the 'Collingwood stereotype', but regardless, I think they would probably be their best bets for what they are looking for.

Who at Centrals ?

One thing we do know is that Hurn has no problem mixing it with men given hes played a season and a bit (roughly) of SANFL league which is a tougher comp than any underage comp.

why are people doubting murphy. ill tell u some things:

-3 secs for a 20 metre sprint at draft camp is a solid performance, pretty good actually
- just because he is 178 cm doesnt mean the kid shouldnt be bnumber one. have we heard of didak, pick 3 i believe and is only 182, and champions such as shane crawford who have perfroemed at the elite modern day level have survived no matter their height because they are good enough.
- didnt run a beep test at draft camp?? oh that means we dont know his endurance,,, cant be that good? ill tell ya this right now,,, 95% of people on this forum wouldnt have their state in div 1 titles in u/16 or 18 titles. if u can play on-ball at that level, and avergae 20+ possies a game then u must have bloody good endurance, steady pace, and fantastic ball winning ability. trust me,,, u need to be SUPER fit to even be considered to geta gig on ball at nationals.

forget doubting him,,, the kid is a great player with good skills. knows where to find the footy and runs to the right spots/ good footy brain, and as noted is a very good clearance player. MIDFIELDERS ARENT SUPPOSED TO BE 190 CM, AND KPP ARENT SUPPOSED TO BE 178, so leave the kid, and watch his name, coz it will rise.

Wont mention names, believes Hurn goes alright as has obviously proven this year, but does not really rate him believing he is an early developer with no real room for improvment...

Nice vote of confidence.

I want Murphy down at Optus Oval now.

As for pick 4, it will be one of Ellis, Hurn or Ryder so I reckon we are on to a couple of good things this year.

exactly.
Plus the kid'll most likely be 180 by the time he's fully grown.

Good point, I could see no way in which a player who has been splitting his time between football and cricket, both at the elite level, who is yet to do a football pre-season because he's playing cricket over that period, could possibly improve...

Oh wait, maybe by doing an actual pre-season, he may actually drop a bit of weight, gain a bit of endurance and speed and drastically improve as a player...

No ********ing contest, would take Murphy without thinking twice about it. Why wouldnt you take a player who can rack up possessions at will in the midfield, disposal is fine, pace if fine and then if needed go forward and kick a bag for you?

Collingwood will take Ellis at 2, then either Hurn or Jones at pick 5 whichever is left, assuming Hawks and Carlton dont take both of them, but I believe the Blues or Hawks will take a KPP at one of those picks
