Nobody does "confidence exceeding ability" quite like the Yanks.

For all our faults we have so many reasons to be grateful to be in Oz. Many many reasons.

They rank so poorly on the world scale for education, health, poverty etc and yet are so ****ing arrogant.

I think from memory they don't even rank top 10 for 'Freedom'. Fair effort when that's all they bang on about

Edit: They're below us! I remember arguing with a yank who thought we were deprived of freedom and had authoritarian rulers so this is funny - https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/freedom-index-by-country

As so often happens with Hurricanes/Cyclones the damage there doesn't seem to be quite as catastrophic as the media predicted.

I guess it's better that they predict the worst case scenario to help keep people safe rather than underplay just how bad it will be.

We still owe the Yanks a debt of gratitude for helping to bail us out in WW2, without them we could all be speaking Japanese now.

No chance. Not with the necessary supply lines for the Japanese and the US desperation for rubber meaning they needed to secure Malaya irrespective of their aims (or non-aims) for Australia.

Hurricane's a ripper. Do we overrate the Soviet army or underrate Hitler's idiocy on the Russian front, can we do both?

The Soviet army's success was down to nothing more than pure weight of numbers. To the question, "Which country did the most to win WW2" I've often heard the (reductive, but useful) answer: UK bought us time (though if they got into Poland, along with the French when they were supposed to they could have snuffed the whole thing out early), USA brought in the arms, and USSR provided the blood.

So it's gone from almost demanding a new 'category 6' down to a cat 1.

Damage not as widespread as feared, but those who copped it won't care about that. And yes, we are going to see more of this sort of thing, and instead of working together on something to reverse or at least ameliorate it, it will remain a wedge issue around the world.
 
According the National Hurricane centre the USA has had 308 hurricanes since 1851 with just 32 category 4 and 5 and 211 category 1 & 2. 65 category 3. It's not an unusual occurrence over there at this time of year! The media hysteria is astounding, it will happen again next year.

Hysteria? The cat 5 cyclones regularly do damage of the order of 10 to 100 billion dollars, and deaths of the order of 10 to 100 as well. They are serious and newsworthy events.

We saw the usual fear pr0n from the corporate media and government bodies. If you don't evacuate you are going to die. Write your name on your arm so we can identify you after you drown. A weatherman crying on air and crapping on about climate change.

Predictably, Hurricane Milton downgraded to cat 1 by the time it hit landfall. Damaging for many properties but not justification for a mass evacuation.

It was similar story in 2017 for Hurricane Irma. Seven million people were urged to evacuate Florida leading to gridlocked highways and hours-long lines at petrol stations. Good luck charging an EV in those circumstances. There was looting of empty properties. In the end the high winds caused plenty of damage but calls for a mass evacuation were unjustified. The next day, thousands of residents were met with police roadblocks when trying to return to their undamaged homes.
