So, what is the rule with this? If a kid is on the main list and fits all the criteria for rookie listing, the club can simply move him over?
Not exactly. He still needs to be delisted and then re-drafted, so there is always a risk another club will take him. But considering Hutchison's injury history and low profile, the chances of that are nyet.

I thought there might have been some sort of "injury rule" as Geelong were said to be putting Tom Lonegran onto their rookie list.

Nah, but there is pretty much an unwritten rule between clubs where you won't touch players like this who are being demoted to the rookie list due to injury.

It wouldn't be a terrible rule though to impliment. As long as all parties consented to it.
