Hypothetical: next coach?

The Cats like to look outside the club for coaches so I don't think it will be Ling or McCartney.

I could see someone like Maxwell or Lenny Hayes heading into coaching and Maxwell's from Geelong, but who knows?

Scarlo might not like that appointment. :p

I was taking the piss when I mentioned Maxwell.:D

You got me rabbi, because if we were picking an outsider I wouldn't mind Lenny Hayes.
I have always questioned the appointment of coaches who never experienced success as players, e.g., Danny Frawley.

As good a player as Lenny Hayes was, I wonder if he'd cut the grade?

What about those like Ayres/Voss?
They experienced the ultimate success multiple times.
Then Clarko probably never did as a player.
I really reckon it comes down to the individual as a manager of men, and the type of communication he has, and of course, the team around him, and under him.
I couldn't wait for Ayresy to be our coach, thought he'd have the perfect blend, but that wasn't to be.
From all reports, he's a hell of a good bloke, but it seems he thought to get Geelong out of their rut of loserdom, he had to be what he was, which did not really work.
How can you pick it?
I really like CS- excellent communicator, smart, understands the modern game, has had success, what more could we ask for.
Hope he's keen for a good period of time yet.
Until Lingy has served an apprenticeship.

If Maxwell became coach of Geelong I'd be shocked. Apparently his dad sent tapes to the club desperately trying to get him picked up by us (much like Max Rooke's dad) and we showed no interest. I remember after they won the flag his dad saying something about Geelong maybe regretting it now, but we showed them in 2011.

and we were spot on for not wanting him, just about the most overrated player i have ever seen

who from our premiership defense over the tripple premiership years would have maxwell replaced? harley? enright? scarlett? taylor? egan? milburn? mackie??? all a big no for me.

seriously shockingly overrated player

I wasn't. Most of what goes on during someones playing career doesn't effect where they end up coaching. As James Kelly (I think) said, Chris Scott used to beat the shit out of him on the field when he was young.

I think Maxwell would make a good coach.

Gee are we planning CS's retirement already?

I wonder if Max Rooke would ever consider being a head coach. I don't think he would have any problems getting players respect that's for sure. It would be different having an ex-Geelong player as head coach too. I'm sure if we ever did go that route, it's because they're the best candidate, not for sentimental reasons, or a love affair our President has with said player. ;)

Agree. Listening to his comments on 7 , he comes across as great coach material.

A current player. From another club.
Care to be a tad more specific.:)

Reckon Linga has the makings of being a very good manager of people.Which is the way the head coaching role is unfolding.

Wouldn't mind Stevie J having a role down the track either as he's credited with being tactically extremely good.

As long as it's not at Geelong as senior coach.
That sort does not do it at Geelong. Any other role, fine.

That's what I was getting at. A support role. More about not having all the necessary leadership qualities than being "that sort" though.

Just re-looking at the criteria Cookie applied to the process that found us Chris Scott. I’d say that Luke Hodge would be a player from elsewhere playing today who would tick most boxes when the time comes. Hopefully not for some time.

The criteria and their weighting were:
- Leadership and cultural development (of the team, the football department and the club): 25 per cent
- Personal qualities: 15 per cent
- Management ability: 15 per cent
- Technical ability: 20 per cent
- Coaching history: 10 per cent
- Ability to communicate: 10 per cent
- Commercial appeal (such as brand focus and ability to relate to members): 5 per cent

Cue this thread being bumped in say 5-7 years time when Scotty's days are done and for someone to gloat about being right.

For mine it has to be Lingy. I can guarantee you he would love to coach the Cats and if the opportunity ever came up he would grab it, he loves the club and I reckon he would be good at it.

Lingy bleeds blue and white, I'd have no problem with him being coach. I would absolutely love someone from the Golden Era to be our next coach and I think he's the guy. He's not too much a Bomber Thompson person, having captained a flag under Scotty, he has almost universal respect in the AFL community, was incredibly smart on field, well spoken off it, and, most importantly in my mind, extracted the absolute most he could from himself as a player. Remember he started as a fat little full forward in the Falcons and became the best tagger of his era, a premiership captain, and is recognized as one of the greatest leaders in the game. I can't imagine a better candidate for coach of Geelong.

What do you mean? Chris Scott is a brilliant tactician, he tactically won us the 11 premiership. If it wasn't for him coming in there's no way that would have ever happened, out coached malthouse in the prime of his day during his first year at the helm. Had a great innovative game plan going this year which conquered all the top teams during the home away season and just fell short due to many small snowballing reasons.

I think he is one of the best tacticians in the AFL, I would not swap him for anyone

Sorry Crazy, please read my post and you'll see I'm referring to SJ.
I love CS as coach.

I know that there are some idiots here who want Scott sacked for getting rid of hospital-case Paul Chapman, but Scotty is proving to be a great coach, and will be our coach in five years time, and even in ten years time.

I hope he achieves even more than Bomber did at Geelong.

FFS give it a rest CM71.
You are starting to sound like a clone of _ME_ after the Ablett departure.

who knows? When Bomber left no one, and I mean absolutely no one predicted Chris Scott would get the job. Sanderson was a lock in most peoples minds. So how can you tell who will even be around in a few years anyway?

I'd like to see one of our past players get the job if they show they're good enough as assistant coaches. But as we see every season when new coaches are appointed that it's hard to predict who a club may pick.
