You generally require 1-2 gun key forwards to win a flag. On rare occasions it has been done with 0-1 (but with some B graders, every time).

And maybe you generally require 3-4 gun midfielders to win a flag. On care occasions it has been done with 1-3 (but some with B graders, every time).

Categorically speaking, top tier forwards are far more rare than top tier midfielders.

You need to look no further than the Carlton Football Club to appreciate the relative importance of elite midfielders v. elite key forwards.

Carlton have had two of the best dozen key forwards on their books, at their prime, for the last 4 years, and the furthest they have progressed in a finals series is a narrow Semi Final win - and they've done that once.

The AFL struggle to choose more than 2 AA KPF but are happy having 10 or 12 midfielders. If you are expanding elite forwards to 6 or 8 then you can easily expand the midfielders to 30.

Darcy has played 15 games for 45 goals. Cameron is the only one ahead of averages.

The best ability is durability. Cant kick goals if you are not on the park.
