This is a revised version of a project I did previously on my old account. The reason I would like to redo it now is because there is now a far more effective and accessible way to compile this teams, with the AFL Coaches' Association publishing round-by-round votes from 2006 onwards. When you combine this with the fact that from 2007 an All-Australian squad of 40 was released, I now have the ability to create teams with much better historical accuracy.
The idea of this is not to create functional State of Origin teams that would play off against eachother, my thinking is more in line with a state-based version of the All-Australian team to honour the top performers of each season.
ADMIN
While my last project started from 2000 due to the real State of Origin finishing in 1999, this one will begin in 2006 when those coaches' votes became available. The basic hierarchy for selection is:
I will try to be as true as possible to proper positions, including picking wingers and flankers in their proper positions. The cut-off I will be using is 17 games played but there is the possibility for a bit of leeway depending on how outstanding the player was.
When it comes to state selection, State of Origin rules are based on where the player played the majority of their football from ages 13 to 17, not necessarily the state they were drafted from, where they were born or where their family was from.
I understand that this will not be perfect.
NOTE - I have decided to expand the State of Origin selections beyond the AFLCA MVP vote resource, which only stretches back to 2006. I'm using the Victoria library system's fantastic online database of AFL Records to collate week-by-week votes as well as using the official All-Australian sides to make teams stretching back to 2000, the year after the final official State of Origin game was played.
However, I have now decided to go back to 1991, which I believe is the earliest season I can collate these sides for a number of practical and 'meta' reasons.
1. 1991 was the first season an official All-Australian side was named for the AFL, rather than a VFL Team of the Year or an All-Australian squad based on an State of Origin carnival.
2. It was the season where control of State of Origin transferred from individual state governing bodies to the AFL Commission and therefore the league choosing to name ceremonial representative sides at the end of the season alongside the new All-Australian team would be realistic.
3. It was the first season where there was a team in each of the five states currently represented in the AFL, with the inclusion of Adelaide to join the Victorian clubs, Sydney, Brisbane Bears and West Coast.
All of this will mean a lot of what I have posted in now out of order but once the project is completed, I will use the threadmark function to allow people to click 'Reader Mode' and view the thread in its intended order.

- higher ranked in the final AFLCA MVP leaderboard
