Devon Smith is the one I think we need to target, he apparently knocked back a contract because he wants more midfield time, we have ample small forwards that could fill a role at the Giants

Wouldn't want to give any more than that, I don't see him as having a particularly high ceiling.
Why? He was a very highly rated junior, and he is just finding his way as a second year player (he's played 19 games). I watched his debut where he kicked 3 goals, looked very composed. I have watched him closely ever since, and while he has struggled to hold his spot in the GWS midfield, that's hardly shameful. He is a ball-winner, and while his stats show inconsistency, he is also very strong overhead and sharp around goal.

I would be over the moon if he came to Hawthorn.

Devon Smith is the most selfish player near goal I have ever seen. Not a great team player and has shown very little as a ball winning midfielder. Geelong can have him for silly money.

I see him as more of a Liam Shiels calibre player down the track, not saying I wouldn't want to get him or he's no good but that's why I said what I did..

I won't reveal my source, but I've heard it from a board member and another former player close to the club. Let me say that both had the same story and both were intoxicated at the time. They're friends so I'll look to confirm it.
Basically what I'm hearing is that there will be a fair exodus from the club this year, players like Gunston, Breust, poppy, Birchall and Frawley were all named. If what I heard was true they will be traded to get back into the 1st round of the draft this year and for future picks next year. Isaac Smith was also named. I'm not saying every player I listed will be traded, but I hear the Hawks are looking to the draft the next 2 years. Will confirm when I here more so by know means don't take this to the bank, but keep the Brisbane Lions as the main target for picks.
Midfielders and a quality Key Forward are targets. Which would make me think a mid this year and a mid and maybe a King twin next? Plus Irving Mosquito is looking like a 2nd rounder at this stage for next year. I thought I'd share I'm Hypothetical because of the intoxication levels during the conversation. Rioli and Roughead 100% NOT mentioned.

You don't exactly have to know much about football to realise that the midfield needs re-building with both grunt and class.
Midfield problems are irrelevant. If you're going to enter this forum and spread panic about trading all our gun players, citing 'inside sources', you'd better have more than 5 posts to your name.

So you say the club wants to target a key forward in the up coming draft, yet Gunston who's only 25 is one of those players who could be on the trade table? It doesn't make any sense. He has the most scope for improvement.

Quality key forwards that can kick 50 goals a year are very hard to find. When Roughead retires next season or the year after, who's going to be our future full forward and center half forward? If the club goes with Schoenmakers and O'Brien as the two key forwards next season we're screwed.

Gunston should be put in the same bracket as Rioli = untouchable

Thanks for taking the time to post what you heard. Assuming it reflects the direction the club wants to go it does seem a little odd.

Clarko has mentioned recently about a 4 year window to compete seriously for a flag. Does that become harder with a 2year draft focus?

The likes of Gunston Smith and Breust are far better realised talents than anything we could draft and develop in a couple of years before then.

I hope the essence of the post does eventuate but the above guys are retained. Hope Poppy and Birchall are given great deals at other clubs and help facilitate 2 more A grade talents to come in.

For me going draft heavy flies in the face of last year's strategy with FA and the regeneration tag peddled all year.

Please continue to post if you hear more!

Stunned by the constant offerings up of Birchall as trade bait. Showed in his minimal games this year he is as good as ever. Without Hodgey we need leadership back there.
And when he's back the flow on effect is we free someone like Gunston up to do something most of us have been crying out for - playing forward.

It's only his age, and the fact he would get us a decent return, that his name gets mentioned
Stratton and to a lesser extent Poppy and Frawley too

We need to regenerate the list
Who goes, and what we can get, is the question

How does the amount of posts you make on big footy correlate with information you may have on an issue/topic?

**** me, four posts? Wind up merchant.

For mine, it's one thing working with Sam to get him a win-win, and Lewis whilst messy got a crazy 3 years for the oldest 30 year old in the game, but I can't see us moving on our mid 20s premiership stars unless they ask to leave.

To be honest, and I hope it ain't so, Rioli wanting to be closer to home may have some legs. Whilst injuries did he spend an extended amount of time back home?

He is a selfish little prick though, could he play a team orientated role?

Thanks for sharing mate.

I for one like the intel!

It precisely lines up with a hard rebuild model of offloading 3+ players of value... Smith, Stratts, Breust ect to get back into the draft this year as I think there are a couple of great targets for the Hawks.

Future picks are also a very tempting method to move on 5+, not all have to be stars, if the club considers the nucleus of the next Premiership on the list.

I'd be confident that if this is the direction we will see a first & future first attained along with a couple of second rounders, one this year & one next, gives us the ammo to shoot for kids like Darcy Fogarty, Callum Coleman Jones & Aiden Bonner in this draft (which is very doable) & 2 first & second Rd picks next year in the "Super Draft"... if that's not taking it to far.

IMO it would be the Ultimate GW list management scenario & set us for a decade as contenders.

Given the speculation surrounding the post, I'm sure there is some truth to the idea anyway, there will be a lot more of these "inflammatory" posts to come.

I like it!

As someone else above said there's no way Gunston is being traded, to valuable with being able to play forward, back and wing (to an extent).

Bruest is on long term contract so unless he wanted to leave, don't see this happening.

Smith won't be traded as we need run, apart from him we have noone decent on on the wings, unless you consider Hartung and Henderson at his level.

Only players the club would trade would be Poppy, Birchall, Frawley and Stratts (currency + age)

I would prefer to trade out poppy and one of the 3 mentioned above to either get a young promising player or to upgrade our existing draft picks or for next years picks. Other than that doubt anything else will happen, as we already shown we have enough youngsters to re-start our rebuild and push for silverware.

Maybe a FA next year will help with that, so there might be someone we are targeting there- if this is the case it means we won't need to waste any picks on this player.

Doubt we will be super aggressive this year as next year might be a year to consolidate our game plan, putting more games into the younger players and generally allowing and promoting natural growth in our list.

If we were going to be aggressive i see it being during the 2018 trade period, as we will be looking to push for top 8/4 in 2019.

Just my 2 cents.
