If the club intends for Mitchell and Jaeger to be the nucleus of our next premiership side then anyone over 26 is going to be out of scope for our next premiership, if we are targeting 2020, who, including Cyril will be at their peak being over 30? To cull the list now makes perfect sense whilst players like Frawley, Smith, Birchall and Breust have real currency.

If we are to be winning in a premiership within 4 years like Clarko said then some of those guys may still be heavy contributors.
We need to trade for an emerging A grade midfielder in the 19-22 age bracket to compliment Titch and Jaeger. Happy to trade a combination of Birchall, Stratton, Shiels, Langford or Puopolo and next years 2nd rounder (must keep our 1st rounder!) to get one. Maybe Big Boy if we think Cegs and Pittonet are ready to go. Must make tough decisions to gain as much young ready made talent as possible. Would not trade Smith, Gunston, Breust or Rioli. Keeping Roughy and Silk is self explanatory. Would keep Frawley because we don't have an obvious replacement yet.
No way. Maccas was carrying us in some games. Unlucky not to get into the AA squad.
Would we put Big Boy up for trade (good fit for GWS - Mummy is cactus or Bulldogs) or Birchall to replace Murphy/Boyd or Shaw? These 2 teams are contending and have an excess of midfielders. Would we use Frawley in a trade if we snagged Trengove as a free agent? Thoughts?
No Big Boy must stay. Open to trading Birchall as good as he is. Still has some trade value and won't be around for our next flag

The player we get with our first pick next year will be just as good as rayner, he's not an absolute stand out number one. I'd imagine we'll save our pick next year and use it on a key position forward

Rayner looks all class from what I have seen and would be a perfect addition to Omeara and Mitchell.

See the unfortunate thing is outside of Mitchell and Omeara we are lacking big time and we need to add some much needed class to this area.

Yeh cool, I don't jump on the hawks board very often so I wouldn't know. Good to see someones keeping count though for the opportunistic shots at sarcasm :thumbsu:
That's alright mate, it's my bad - I should have assumed that somebody with Nick Giannopolous as their avatar wouldn't have a great sense of humour.

People need to remember that just because 8 names are on a trade list doesnt mean we are happy to get rid of 8 players.

No chance we trade all of Birch Statt and Chip but there is a chance 1 or even 2 may go.

No chance we trade all of Poppy Breust and Gunston but there is a chance 1 or 2 may go.

And as for Big Boy after his best season ever... bloody hell it would need to be a huge offer. Like Kelly.

Yeah, a ruck coming off a career best year in the prime of a rucks life at 27. You'd be hoping for a lot if we do get rid of him.

Best time to sell. If Big Boy was courted by GWS (or the Bulldogs) I would be happy for him to chase some more flags if it meant we got another premium midfielder. I think our ruck stocks would be ok without Big Boy but we desperately need more young quality in the midfield. I think Pittonet is ready for AFL and Cegs will return fresh for 2018. FWIW I think McEvoy should be one of our vice captains and was fantastic this year and should have made the AA squad of 40 but we must have an eye to the future/our next flag.

Based on zero inside knowledge, but reading / listening to lots of speculation, our trade season might possibly look something like this:

Poppy to GWS:
- Poppy plus pick 33 to GWS for pick 24 plus a future 3rd?
Balic to Hawks
- Pick 43 to Freo for Balic?
Hawks trade a ready-made player to a contender for youth:
- Stratton plus a future 4th to Richmond for a future 2nd?
Fagan rates Whitecross for leadership
- Whitecross and pick 61 to Brisbane for pick 42?
Duryea is UFA.
- If he leaves we can hope for a 3rd rounder, pick 44.

Out - Poppy, Stratton, Whitecross, (maybe Duryea), plus Hodge and Gibbo.
In - Balic

Picks:
24 - Best available, hopefully a tall.
42 - match bid for Jiath?
Others - hope GW can find a late gem like Poppy / Morrison etc.

Next year we would have 5 picks in the first 3 rounds, plus hopefully cap space for Tom Lynch.

Thoughts?

Clarko loves Stratts too much to let him go for a pkt of twisties, whitecross will likely end up a delisted FA. Fwiw I still don't see us trading players for picks, I see the club chasing players with 1 year left on their contract in the 20-23 age bracket.

A 2018 second rounder is hardly a packet of twisties, IMHO.

If next years draft is half as good as the hype, then an extra pick in the 2nd round could be very handy.
Sam Mitchell was pick 36 in 2001.

He's not a pure midfielder, he doesn't have the tank dusty has, he'll end up more of a jake stringer type player. He runs a 12 in the beep test which is absolutely miles off what is needed to be an afl quality mid

If there's a player on our list that has currency and that we could cover, it's Breust. If he could be used in any way to get a Whitfield-type, that would be a great win for the club. To be perfectly honest, with the emergence of Howe as a stopper, I'm now starting to believe that Shiels in expendable. So if he could also net us a decent return, I'd be ok with him leaving.

I was originally of the thought that the Hawks should try to get back into the draft this year, but if the draft crop as shallow as has been mentioned, I'd be happy to trade for established players over speculative picks.

Ideal ins for this off-season would be Whitfield, Matt Kennedy, Balic and Trengove (RFA).

In a perfect world, we would also front-end some contracts in 2018 and really target what is looking like an awesome FA crop at the end of next season. Lynch and Sloane in particular come to mind.

Pup's year as been ok despite his injuires and won't be getting traded
Getting weary of reading about how he should be out the door
Im sure after some of the reviews were done last week there would be a few more worried than Pup

What if we weren't just trying to trade out list-cloggers?

Maybe he's identified as having leadership & resilience & knows how to work with youngsters & so is very valuable to someone like Brissie; who are trying to build a solid side full of kids & will probably lose Rockliff as a FA?

*& if they do lose Rocky as a FA, will then have Picks 1, 2, 15 & 19.

Then he could be all those good things people have said about him, as well as being a likely trade target, at the same time.

FYI - Dustys tank was deplorable as a junior, from memory his aerobic testing was pretty bad

May as well trade Roughie the way things are going

Burton didn't win the rising star.... he needs to go

#hyperbole
There's gonna be significant player movement, that was the case when we were winning, when we're losing its naturally going to be more aggressive.

When we drafted Hodgey at 1 he would of been lucky to run a 4 in the beep test.

Don't get caught up in the testing nonsense. The kid can play.
