Last year this year's draft was being hyped. It happens every year. Then every year there are only a few gems but all the talk is about what is coming next.

We would be stupid to trade players now for future picks. If we are rebuilding we need to do it now. While we still have Burgers and Rough and Chip and McEvoy.
We also have to take Irving Mosquito if he is there is a bid in the 2nd placed on him. Hopefully we can hide him next year lol

Reported by a "journalist" on Talking Footy that Hartung won't be guaranteed a contract until after trade period. Doubt we would ever delist him, but sounds like we would prefer a trade.

What's stopping Hartung getting good money to go through the pre-season draft dierct to Brisbane and play for Fagan. I'd be thinking about that if i was him, unless I had good reasons to stay in Vic.

Hope the best for the club and the players on this one. But ideally, we find a club willing to pay a hell of a lot for Hartung and get a trade done. If that doesn't happen then I personally back Hartung to prove himself in B&G.

Surely we could be keeping Hartung unless we had a replacement in mind. Whether you rate him or not we don't have anyone to play his role if he leaves unless we bring one in to the club this trade season. Whitfield possibly?

Now we're getting somewhere.

Gaff would be a good get!

Stratts &..... a 3rd???

Anyway, agree with Rogie that he would be cheeper than Whitfield but the question is "How much"?

WC won't be giving him away & I would have thought he was a required player

Lachie, if you read the article re him in the Age last week, feels to me like a man at home in GWS. (I know, right!!!!!! No accounting for taste). Another post mentioned earlier before that article that this was the case too.

I'd love to get him. If we court him I think we'd first have to convince him that we are willing to pay the price for him draft-wise. That won`t be cheap in contract.

The Hartung situation is not new.

We've done this with others in the past.

Let them look around and entertain offers, to see what is forthcoming. Then decide whether if the trade is worthwhile.

Hartung has suitors, but it remains to be seen how far they are willing to go to get it done.

Not sure how much stock it has but Stevo just mentioned him being gettable on Talking Footy, and it's not the first I'd heard.

I think that's exactly right. The "journalist" who says "no guarantees" for a contract really misrepresents what's actually happening. Clarko and Hartung would be on the same page on this, even if they don't agree totally. It will be a mutually beneficial outcome.

Hypothetical:

Brisbane gives: Josh Schache, pick 41 2017

We give: Jack Gunston, Taylor Duryea, Kade Stewart

Gets a homesick youngster with massive potential closer to home, gets Brisbane off the bottom of the ladder very quickly.
Gunston is close to the most valuable player on our list and a future captain - and is also 25. Trading him would be moronic.

Taylor could be obtained for free so won't be part of a trade. Stewart would be surplus for the Lions because they have Zorko.

Schache isn't that homesick because he re-signed with the Lions.

If Rockliff decides to leave Brisbane as a FA at worst that would land them a pick at the start of the 2nd round around pick 19-20. Considering they already have pick 19 hopefully that makes their compo pick gettable.
I'd like us to try and get that pick for hartung with a swap of our pick 33ish and their 42ish or with another player (eg Whitecross) Then hopefully we can use that pick along with Poppy to GWS for Whitfield. That frees up cap space for Kelly and gives them the small forward they crave along with a decent kid. It then allows us to possibly trade Stratton for Gaff (have heard he's gettable) to get us some outside run. I'm not that great with player values so we'd probably need to throw in some steak knives here and there.
Being creative along these lines gets us some outside run, another quality mid and keeps us in next years first round.
Thoughts? Is it even remotely realistic?!

Is there any half decent mail that Whitfield wants out at GWS or is all of this based on the 'he followed the Hawks as a kid' factor?
I just want him! They will have to lose someone to keep Kelly. I think they would sign up Coniglio and Greene before Lachie so hopefully it means we can offer him a better contract than they can. That's my theory based on zero mail

By all means debate it. I take it you think it's heavily stacked in the Lions' favour?

I don't want Gunston to leave at all, but I think that this is what a hard nosed list management trade would look like.
Sorry mate.

Yep, way heavily weighted toward them.

Gunston is massively versatile. Has kicked 50+ goals many times & has shown this year that he can play HBF. He gets around the ground as well as anyone & is strong on the lead & in contested marking (for his size). And, he's a 3x Premiership Player - he's done the yards & built the current culture - we need him to be inducting the new dudes & showing them how it is done.

And he's only 25/26. He'll be there when we challenge again & will make our KPFs better for it.

Gunston, Roughy, Cyril & Smith are my only untradable players (Smitty mainly 'cause he's my favourite).

We snuck Gunners away from Adelaide when he was still cheapish - Schacke won't be. I'd much rather we chase KPF as Free Agents than have to trade for them. Otherwise they cost us in both Picks & cash.

Doc Dre & Kade Stewart aren't even real things as far as trades are concerned.

I think you are being pretty optimistic with how easily clubs are going to give up contracted quality players.
