Becuase he lacks the communication skills that Carey has.

I would love to see Gaz back at the club but maybe is a specialist role. One on one with a forward.

Exactly - Gaz is a genius but not a comunicator or a teacher, or a motivator ....do any of you remember him as Captain....

Being a Coach is a lot more than being a good footballer.

The problem is that none of the replacements being discussed have any sort of a REAL track record as a coach. (with the exception of Creswell who is not an option)

Without someone with PROVEN ability we could be lot WORSE off. I never ceased to be amazed by the "grass is always greener" views I see on this Board regarding coaches and players (in particular draftees).

I don't want another five years to go by while we find out whether the next "big thing" in coaching is the real thing or not.

Sure Bomber has his issues (everyone does including all the premiership coaches I can think of) but he has got a fair bit out of an average list. Unless we can get someone with PROVEN ability, while we getting close to having a list that will let us have a tilt at a flag, I would rather have someone where we know where the weakness are and we can at least work on improving in those areas.

Remember Blighty took us to 3 Grand Finals then left to give Adelaide 2 flags in a row. I am not saying Bomber is Blighty, but Bomber did take an average list to a Prelim and then to probably to within a kick of a GF.

I know we get frustrated, so do I, footy is frustrating. But I think we are too quick to jump off. I think we have been too harsh on Bomber, Kingsley and to a lesser extent Kelly.

I know many of you want Bombers blood but before you jump off make sure you have a viable proven option - or we may find ouselves back here with the same issues in another 5 yrs.

Now THAT is a voice of reason and wisdom. Nice work Malvern.

Carey would be a quality head coach, forget the 'we need a coach with senior experience' smack, we won't get one. I'd happily take Cresswell as well, he's familiar with alot of our setups from his time here a few yrs ago. We could always harrass Gary Lyon even though it's unlikely he'd come on board. Bottom line is, we can't keep Thompson and his garbage setups/plans. There needs to be new ideas and a fresh face at the club......i'm still willing to coach for half Thompson's salary if Costa opens his eyes and really wants success.

Yeah, great idea - why don't we be the bunnies to train a senior coach for someone else, who of course we sack in 5 years time cos he hasn't delivered a flag.....who we will whinge about because he hasn't been exactly what we thought he would be.

Hang on - let's just get anyone! It doesn't matter as long as we have the appearance of action, the appearance of improvement - it doesn't have to be well thought out or have any basis in reality - as long as we are doing something, anything.

Yeah, let's forget everything we have done so far, let's just change everything! Sack half the list, all the Coaches, the President, CEO, sponsorship dept, membership, the bootstudder, the canteen lady, the doctor we just got, the car park attendents, don't forget Gary Davidson and Stephen Wells, (I mean didn't they pick Kelly, Gardiner, Mackie, Kingsley et al) - cos really they are all, all ****e - they've all done nuthin.

Bomber has had 7 years to produce a result. I agree he isn't a bad coach, but given all the time he has had and what has happened this year we are not being fickle about him or hasty to abandon him. He has been given ample time to take this list to the ultimate prize...oh he did, I forgot the NAB Cup...(cough)

Ahhhhhh!!!! Get over him. Henpecked and doing nothing at Brisbane.
That's absolutely laughable.

Ask Brisbane about the impact he's had on their forward line this season, getting to score pretty well without Jonathan Brown for the majority of the season, re-establishing Daniel Bradshaw as a quality FF, and getting the youngsters like Hooper to become fairly solid AFL players with a good future.

Ask Jimmy Bartel and James Kelly about the impact Darren Cresswell had on their football, look at how they played in 2004, and look at how they're playing now.

The day that arrogant a***hole comes to Geelong, is the day i tear up my membership.

(empty threat, i know.. but it dont mean i have to like it ;) )

Dont believe that for one second. It would be pretty hard to tear your memebership up because they are plastic, DOPEY! You'd have to be pretty strong.

You might be able to cut your membership up though... :D

Daz, whats up with you? Normally i agree with most things you say, however rejecting one of the greatest players to ever play the game would be a mistake.

I'd open the King with open arms... We need all the help we can get.

Creswell is the only candidate atm but unless something has changed he is not available.

As for Carey - he is UNPROVEN. Just because he was a great player it doesn't mean he will be a great coach. Even if he does have what it takes he does not have senior coaching experience. With the list we have we do not need to be the ones blooding a "new to coaching" new coach. It is insanity. Just when we have got the list to a point when we are close to having the talent to have a real crack we go and bring in a green coach.

NO - we need a proven performer or someone who has shown they have what it takes at assistant level. IF NOT WE SHOULDN'T CHANGE.

We have had a bad year - yes. So did Melb, a few times in the Daniher era but they have resisted the temptation to do something stupid and are a real chance this year.

I can't understand this "he has had seven years" stuff. So what. What would you have done differently prior to 04? What would have got us to being a flag contender any faster other than finishing bottom 2 years in a row? What would be changed (discounting the benefit of hindsight)? Not much.

We had two pretty good years in 04, 05, probably better than expected.

06 sucked. We have had a bad year. So what does that have to do with the previous 6? The arguments put forward seem to actually have little to do with the previous 6 years and everything to do with 2006.

If Bomber had been cr@p for the previous 6 then yes you have a point but I don't think that is the case. Lets face it, this is all about a bad 2006, a lot of which cannot be directly placed at Thompson's feet.

I draw your attention malvern to the fitness problems the side has had over the last 2 years. You can't tell me that his programs are well put together when he is declaring our side is finally fit in round 16. Now I know you will say he isn't the fitness coach and the side has had injuries etc. But if you think that Bomber has no say in the fitness training at the club then that is a little naive.

The other questionable side to his coaching is his match day decisions. He coaches like a man who has made a plan before the match and sticks to it no matter what. Now this is fine if the side is winning. But as has happened too many times this year his approach has been costly with some players being soundly thrashed. This inabilty to react quickly to the dynamic of the games is a worrying aspect of his coaching.

The next thing is the players attitudes have been questionable this year and he should be able to get their minds on the job. That is his job. Yet he looks just as lost as we are sometimes about why the players are playing the way they are. Is this how you want the Senior Coach to be? Not me.

Costa promised a Premiership by 2006 when he took over. Bomber has had time to turn this side into a premiership side and has come close. I don't dislike him, but just think his time is up. The buck has to stop somewhere and it should be with him. Some of the players will get their rewards for their questionable attitudes/abilities in the draft this year.

You know, I agree totally with what you say about Bomber. It is the mere fact that we can so readily identify these issues that makes me want to be so very careful about the alternatives.

The devil you know.

All of the above are issues that can be addressed. If the players and the coach were at each others throats or there were some other terminal problem.

The point I am trying to make is:

We are in the here and now - what is the best option going forward that will get us a flag?

Is sacking the coach the best option? I am not sure it is given the available alternatives. And that is the problem. Our list is getting close to being one that could win a flag - I don't want to waste that on an unproven, green coach because of the perception that Thompson's "time is up" or "he's had his chance" and so on.

Start a thread on avalaible Coaches and lets go thru them one by one. Lets see whats actually out there.

Why thank you Foreskin :thumbsu:

Basically what im saying is id like to have a coach that i wouldnt have the great urge to spit on as they walked down the race. (n thats every game, not just when it gets bad, eh Richmond supporters? ;) )

Glad to see SOME people have some ethics around here...

(i choose BUSINESS ETHICS :D )

Agree 100%, this is Thommos greatest failing in my opinion, it appears that he has a plan "A" and if this fails there's no plan "B".
It was never better illustrated then against the Swans earlier in the season, Ling was obviously chosen as Goodes opponent, which was fair enough, but when Roos moves him to full forward, Ling follows him and ends up playing at full back, which is ridiculous.

He'll move the defenders around at times, which is sorta like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, but he lacks any real flair, and the ability, or willingness, to try something completely outside the square.

Thought we beat the Doggies the other day despite his coaching, not because of it, and his tactics at the weekend were puzzling to say the least, isolating Ottens in the forward fifty, often against two or more opposition players, and with no crumbers to assist.
The way the forward line was structured, Ottens would have needed to kick at least ten goals for Geelong to have had a chance of winning.

Great bloke Thompson, straight forward, heart on the sleeve type, and has played a big part in dragging the club back from the edge of oblivion, but he's not paid to be a great bloke, but a top coach, and I don't believe he measures up in that department, not by quite a margin.

Well done.

Walk out on the club if Carey comes. Nice one morons, what does what he did at North have to do with being a decent head coach.
Those that are crying about him being unproven can you please state exactly what you want out of our next coach?

Um, one that isnt a ex-crim, who treated his teammates (not to mention women) like complete n utter s*** would be good.

One with integrity and class. And one you could trust.

;)

Would you welcome Gary Ablett Senior back at the cattery with open arms?

His sins are far greater than Carey's. The one you treat women does not reflect your coaching abilities...

Sins?? Well Careys date back to sexually assaulting an innocent woman on the way to her work! Why dont we just get Stevie Milne to Geelong and chuck in the Rugby Bulldogs players as well (just in case they have something valuable to contribute)

Carey is nothing but an arrogant, sod of a p-rick. Would not want him at all. :thumbsd:

ps. And yeah, u know full well about my stance on Ablett. Wont bother repeating myself.
