No 1 Draft Pick said:
I for one am worried about week 22 in Perth

The last 3 times we have played in Perth R22 has resulted in the following the next week

98 QF Vs Melb SMASHED
01 EF Vs Car SMASHED
02 QF Vs Bris SMASHED

All 3 of the above were awy goames though. It is an outrage that one team hsa been drawn to play in Perth in R22 in 4 out of 8 years

it seems to me who ever has to stand up for us in this situation aint standing up correctly.I dont know if its true but when the draft draw came out we were at home in round 22 to collingwood but eddie said we aint travelling in round 22 so they changed it and now we have to.If this is true i dont know who is weaker the afl or us

Hi again,

By the way, I'm not having a go at anyone here, I'm having a go at the Advertiser. (just in case it doesnt come across that way).

I've finished looking at the stats for all clubs coming off a trip to Perth since Freo joined the comp in 1995. The number that won the following week is (as posted earlier) 108 out of 202, or 53%.

If you look at the proportion that won, given they only have a 6 day break between games (there were none less than 6 days), 41 out of 78 won the following week, which is 53%!

So not only does it not appear to matter whether a team plays in Perth the previous week, it also doesnt seem to matter how long a break they have between games!

It's only a 3 hour flight sitting on their arses. Anyone would think that was more strenuous than the game itself.

This is insufficient data to draw any statistical information from. The statistical evidence from the home and away seasons suggests there is NO disadvantage to playing in Perth the week before. Just because AFC lost 3 games (which they were underdogs for each time anyway) is no reason to blame prior Perth trips. The evidence just isnt there.

Statistics is based on large numbers of observations. 202 is enough to draw trends from. 3 isnt.

The Advertiser today again makes its claim about teams winning 17% of matches returning from Perth. Its one thing to have an opinion about why AFC lost those 3 games but another thing entirely to repeatedly publish false statistics related to the matter which will no doubt get much of SA up in arms based on misinformation.

I had a chuckle when I read that. He really has no idea does he.

Rucci produces factual errors at a ridiculous rate.

We are all human and make mistakes from time to time but how someone in his position with his resources can make so many is beyond me.

A quick glance at his article today on Chris Knights reveals further inaccuracies. In paragraph 2 he claims that Nathan van Berlo made his debut in round 1 against West Coast. He didn't, he made it in round 3 against Port Adelaide. In paragraph 3 he then states that van Berlo has since played 2 more games. Incorrect because he has played a total of 4 games.

Todays errors are not particularly significant, but it is so simple to find this information on the AFL's website that these type of errors just shouldn't occur at the rate Rucci makes them. On the other hand, the wrong stats about winning after playing in Perth are a huge stuff up, because he's pretty much basing the whole article on those stats.

Yeah it's pretty amazing they made such a big stuffup which nobody bothered to verify.

He basically could have written something very similar to Monday's article, excluded the (wrong) stat about teams losing backing up from Perth and instead mentioned AFC's poor final's record after they played in Perth on round 22 and I wouldn't have had a problem with it.

I sent the Advertiser an email advising them of their error but of course they'll never admit they were wrong.

Like I said earlier, as a passionate aussie rules state we really do deserve better than this hack.

Probably not too hard to get rid of him.
If everyone here were to email the editor every time Rucci made an error and tell him the same thing I bet he wouldnt last long. There'd be several keen junior reporters after his job who I bet would be more diligent. Rucci is clearly just being lazy.
