When I play well, when I play aggressively, when I play conservatively, when I play "on tilt", I get beaten - is my poker life over? Should I take a break? Should I take up backgammon?

The more I play the more I believe Poker is about the "read"

To tell you the truth, I only play "play money" online and I believe that's the problem - people will call anything - bluffing effectively is almost non-existent - maybe it's time to take the plunge and play for real money...... or should I only play "live"?

very much so mate

if you start playing for real money, you wil notice a massive change in how people play. But I guess, the risks are greater for yourself as well, and not everyone wants to gamble for real coin, especially over the internet.

I recommend playing at a low limit casino game if you get the chance or even better, get a few mates together and start having regular poker nights gambling for amounts you can afford.

Well Binxy, to be honest with you from what I've experienced playing "live" for example, can be the same. Last few times I've been to Crown to play live, I've lost to just absoloutely shocking calls, as a student I'm not exactly rolling in cash, so I go down there to play $1/2 no limit, I'm aiming on only spending $60 (which is 1 buy in). But then you have these regular 9-5 guys who are earning typical wages, $40,000+ so they come down with $120, $180 once guy I talked to even brought down $240, which is 4 buy-ins because he told me he "wanted to gamble" today. So naturally as I want to last and hang around for a while I only play the better cards, pocket pairs or anything decent with an ace or paint, so when I play A-J, put in a hefty raise which was me all-in, and get called by q-3 and k-5 it just frustrates the hell out of me when a Q comes and I get knocked out.

Deposit some money online!

Those who are saying it is a risk, well life is full of risks.

Read up on some forums on strategies on winning etc. I started with $50 and that has grown into alot more than that. Just start with that $50 and play at the lower levels until your bankroll can handle the variance of moving up in limits. With the amount of bonuses and rake rebate money you can get online its almost silly to play solely in real life.

A (or the) fundamental of poker is to know what cards your opponents have more often than they know what you have. :)

I haven't played online for cash but plan to in the future. From what I've read play money games are a waste of time if you want to develop your skills... it's only good for getting used to the interface. If you haven't already you should do a lot of reading, buy some good poker books. There are some good web sites out there. Read up on PokerTracker, it is well reviewed. Set yourself some bankroll rules and build a bankroll to play with. Play low stakes and learn at that level until you are good enough to play for higher stakes. Highroller makes some good points about bonuses and rakebacks... easy money if you have the time to clear them. Consider your initial bankroll as paying for your education.

DoubleA - you should be happy to be called by crap cards as in the long run the odds are with you! You should be happy to be playing fish with money to burn. Poker is not a short-term game.

When I usually get on a dry patch and cannot win any tournaments I have a huge break..as I am now..I don't think I've played Poker for a week atleast!

When you play again you'll be fine.

I found myself doing really badly on the 0.01/0.02 cent tables so I played some sit and go's ($2 or $3 entry) and noticed a very quick improvement.

I don't really venture online to play, mainly stick to bricks and mortar but if the microlimits are anything like the 4/8 and $60 no limit tables at crown they're basically a crapshoot.. the 'No-foldem' brand of holdem. Although there is some skill to winning money at these tables, its not the traditional type of poker as theorised in so many of the leading books. www.lowlimitholdem.com is a great resource for these small limits, the cards that win you money are the ones that can flop into monsters. One of the biggest pots I've won at 4/8 is with 9-10 suited, flopped the open ended straight draw and bet it to buy the turn, made the straight on the turn and could keep betting with 5 people still in the pot till the river! was about $200 in the pot which is MASSIVE for 4/8. These cards you can usually get in cheap and dold no problems if you miss the flop, the amount of times 'premium' cards will be outdrawn is annoying... top pair top kicker is easily run down when theres 5+ in the field looking for their miracle card.
