This is my attempt at solving the "yeah, but who have they beaten?" argument that an uneven fixture gives us.
The idea is that a club is awarded a certain amount of points based on the ladder position of the team they defeated (on the form ladder).
Teams start the season based on how they finished last season (the premiers start with 20 points and 1st place, runner-up start with 19 and 2nd place, and it trickles down by a point for each position until we get to last place, who start with 3 points).
Beat the team on top of the form ladder and get 20 points. Beat second place and get 19 etc.
So, after round 1, here's how the form ladder played out (compared to the current AFL ladder):
