Sponcership or not this deal stinks ,it is selling our identitie as a Victorian based club and to a large number of us that happens to mean a hell of a lot.Call me short sighted ,petty whatever you like but when we have a further 5000 less Victorian members for the sake of an extra 2000 tasmanians on the books then it all of a sudden is a big deal.We will become the laughing stock of the league over this, $15 million or not.
if 5000 hawks fans dont get memberships because of this they arent real hawks fans! the club needs us now more than ever! we took our club for granted once before remember! so if u get to go to 11 hawks game in vic wherever they might be its a privilege isnt it?

Remember were the mighty fighting hawks so get to tas if u can, if not get somewhere where we can watch the game together as a family cos thats what we are !

I think a few Hawk fans need to take a deep breath and get a grip. First of all we will ALWAYS be known as the Hawthorn Football Club. The Tassie Govt are our sponsors and as such need us to promote their state, just like we have promoted Wynvale, HFC Finance, Samsung etc etc - we can promote anyone. Plus we will be making mega dollars to help secure not only our identity but also location - i think this is where some of you are not on the same tram. All is looking good Hawk fans, both financially and on the field. Now is not the time to start kicking the club which imo has come along way since the disasterous season that was 2004.

I think its a pretty good outcome, come on its just a sponsorship deal guys that will allow us to survive. We are not owned by Tassie, play all our games in Tassie, are admin located in Tassie or have a reserves in Tassie. I think the Tassie venture has been great so far. Yes the Tassie Hawks will take a bit of getting used to, but we always have been, still are and always will be the Hawthorn Football Club, whether you yell 'go hawks, 'go hsbc hawks' or go 'tassie hawks'. Great to move into a closer relationship with Tassie in footy. It should be mutually fantastic and I look forward to its success.

Promote them ....no worries ,wear a logo on the shorts that says "tourism Tasmania" No we are talking about changing a name to imply that we are representing that state ,totally different from the Wynvale or Samsung Hawks .Our name says a lot about the demographic we represent and our history when we f$ck with that then it's not just another sponsership deal.

Sort of understand where you might be coming from but it's not permanent which means it has changed NOTHING, it implies absolutely nothing, unless you choose to get sucked in by a name solely for sponsorship reasons. The kangas and bulldogs have lost their suburban identities - we have not. Who gives a stuff what it may or may not imply, the fact remains we are the Hawthorn Hawks happy to be also known as the Tassie hawks to secure our long term identity - bloody smart financial deal - just wish some could see through the fog.

If you think it hasn't changed anything means you probably don't attend games in melbourne.

There are a number of concerns about todays announcement:

1. the tassy name- the club needs to make sure members & public are not confussed.

2. The club has committed to provide provide 11 games at the MCG next year there is going to be considerable dissatisfaction amongst members if it can't. We are locking ourselves in at York Park for 5 years on the one hand but we cannot lock in games at the MCG for 5 years and also cannot lock in the cost for membership rights for the 4 away games at the MCG each year for 5 years.

This has always been one of the risks with this deal.

Been attending games in Melbourne since 1978 and understand the deal and more importantly why it has been done.

1. Increases the Tasmanian brand hence Hawthorn brand across Tasmania
2. Further increases the HSBC brand which is why they were more than happy to extend their contract as princiopal partner for a further 3 years.
3. The move to relocating games to Tas strengthens our bargaining power with the AFL to play more games at the MCG, ie "designated home games"
4. After 5 years with the coffers nice and healthy the club has the choice to renegotiate with tas govt or move back to melbourne permanently.
5. Our home away from home is showing signs that this venue has a definite home ground advantage for us.
6. Have a look at the struggling Vic clubs, 2 have lost their suburban identities already, 4 are on AFL welfare - but not us we retain our name and maintain a very healthy balance sheet, only to be further strengthened.

It's supporters like yourself with short sightedness who are confusing the issue - if you don't belive what i am saying, why not contact Jeff yourself. He is a passionate Hawthorn supporter first, president second. He knows what the footy climate holds for Victorian clubs and is making all the right moves to secure it.

A very very wise man.

Go Hawks!

Oh Gee Hawk0373 you understand the deal & you say I don't.

Then tell me how is the club going to honour its original commitment to members regarding games at the MCG.

Don't tell me I am short sighted I am certainly not confussed about the issues involved and have contacted the club to express my concerns and are awaiting a response.

And don't tell me to just accept what the admin says - in 1996 they said we should merge because we would go broke otherwise!

The club can still negotiate 7 home and 4 designated home games at the MCG next season, cant it?

Well done for contacting the club however - please let us all know what the response is.

yeah which is why you should hold of **** canning the club until it strikes any deal with the AFL. This seems to be your only issue along with a poorly perceived notion that we have lost our identity.

Wake up Hawk.... you are obviously not communicating with enough Hawk members not to know there is considerable dissatisfaction with what is going on with no consultation with melbourne membership

Also as I noted in post 32 and the questions I posed in post 34 you and the club cannot answer the Q how to lock in these away games at the MC for 5 years - they never could & that is the risk in locking ourselves in at York Park for 5 years.

I actually have many issues regarding this deal namely that it is totally unwarranted but I will go into that at another time.

They're all naming rights. Do you think people will go 'so easy' on us being dubbed the Tasmanian Crows?

At first I thought we were 'screwing the Tasmanian Government over' by doing this deal, but it seems they've been the very smart ones in all this. They understand that the media will harp on about us being the 'Tasmanian Crows' and soon the stigma will stick. Young Hawthorn fans wont have a clue who they are meant to be supporting. A club that is meant to represent Hawthorn, that is based in Waverley, and plays a quarter of it's games in Tasmania? Yeh, makes sense.

This is just one of Jeff's twisted marketing schemes in an attempt to tap into the Tasmanian market and make every cent count. I appreciate this could contribute to the long-term financial viability of the club, but we're losing part of our identity as a result.

I reckon the Tasmanians should be starting their own board. Surely the Tassie Government could have supported a decent team rather than taking the cheap way out and scraping the bottom of the barrel! Shane Crawford still wouldn't have half a brain if he had two heads, and I know there's a joke about a map of Tasmania being so close to brown and yellow...

Usually I don't care about the crap other clubs spout about the Hawks, but this is the kind of bull**** we're going to have to put up for the next 5 years.

I give up.

So you keep saying every single thread without an outcome having been reached. You need to sleep on this one, wait for the response from the club then get back to us with the results.

We will discuss when this happens.

Until then, in my mind, it is a very shrewd investment, albeit a temporary one, where the only long term effects will be our bank balance and ability ot spend more funds on areas which will have a direct effect on onfield performance, ie where it counts most.

This is the long term view, not today's view by many.

Nice debating with you. ;)

Cheers

Nah, watching Hawthorn play footy these days is funny enough.

I use the term "footy" very loosely for what they do.

Can understand Frankencow's dislike for tassie, lets face it, his team couldn't win a game down there - just like the Moorabin days....and any prelim final venue. <C H  K E >

Maybe you guys can give us the tip on winning there, you'll probably end up playing there more than Victoria. I admit we can't win much in Tassie, but let's face it, you guys can't win much anywhere, lol.
