I was listening to 3AW at the footy last week (collingwood v adelaide), anf Gary Lyon(I think) said something about people wer trying to organise to boycott a match soon. Anyone else here this? It seems pretty drastic, dont u think?

I don't think a boycott of a game will work (as it would be very difficult to get enough people to stay away for it to be effective). Also, a boycott will only hurt the clubs involved financially.
Perhaps a better idea is to boycott TV coverage of a certain game. This will severley upset Channel seven (which is the root of a lot of the problems in football such as scheduling of matches and Colonial stadium)
I am not suggesting that no-one watch the game on TV, simply that those several thousand people with ratings meters in their home tune out (and go to a mates place to watch this). So while all those who want to watch the game on telly still can, this type of selective boycott will mean that the match rates very poorly. Unlike some other figures, the AFL cannot fudge ratings figures. Advertisers will be very hesitant about paying channel 7 for air time if no-one knows how many people are actually watching.
People who are able to, and do take part in the boycott can then have a real impact on the AFL with very little inconvenience to them and with no risk.
I know that it would be difficult to organise this, but perhaps if it was an ongoing thing (eg every friday night game), the AFL would soon start listening to the fans that it has up until now taken for granted.
What do you think??

Yeah seems like a good idea to me! I think someone should start organising or promoting the idea of boycotting television coverage on something like Friday nights! But the logistics etc involved would be huge..

Some games are being boycotted already !
I wouldn't boycott a Hawthorn Game but If everyone refused to reserve a seat at colonial (just turn up)they would soon open up more areas to 'standard' pricing. Eventually channel seven will want more crowds behind the goals and in areas the cameras sweep over.

Boycott its a good idea
I myself have been looking into us the supporters have our own official association that is recognised by the AFL
We are important to this game surviving and if the AFL dont listen then the game is going to be eaten up in greed money and tv rights
We need to have a say and that way saturday afternoon games would still be herefood drink prices need to be looked at
The AFL is complaining about crowds I think we are all getting fed up with the AFL crap and lack of direction and lack of thought for the supporters
I wish I knew how to view my supporter association point out to a wider audience instead of forums and the odd pamphlet left on cars
AFL needs to listen to us the supporters

What do you want to boycott about?

What a pathetic attitude towards the greatest game in the world. The standard of games are getting better and better boycotting games means your just missing out on watching great footy - How could you want this!

Don't be so negative you crazy boycotters'

I don't want to boycott anything, BUT I just heard Gary Lyon commenting on the radio regarding the matter. However, some of the the australian football public is very disenchantered with the way the AFL is being run at the moment (like it should be, a business otherwise there would be no AFL), I must ask though, when was the last time the AFL did something with the fans in mind? They need to listen to us, just imagine if the AFL kept on not listening to the FANS of the game fo another 50 years, how stuffed would the AFL be then?

W e only want to try and boycott one round of footy
Alot of people and the AFL think this couldnt be done
But if we could all do it just once tp show the AFL that yes we are strong and yes we want a say
We need to have a supporters group that talks direct to the AFL
If a boycot was to happen then that weekend people could go and watch the VFL

There is consensus that somehow a 'message' should be sent to the AFL (but perhaps they're preoccupied at the moment)

A boycott seems to have mixed support but there are several things that can be done short of that. Perhaps the attendance at a specified VFL game when ther is no AFL game in melbourne.

But remember that tens of thousands of fans have already taken more extreme measure and not bought memberships (ironically Hawthorn, St Kilda and Melbourne who seem to be listenening to their fans most) so perhaps a sharp shock tactic might take the heat out of the situation
