He has signed a four year deal -
Year 1 (2001) - $350,000
Year 2 - $350,000
Year 3 - $850,000 !!?!
Year 4 - $850,000

I know for a fact, as i got this info from an 'associate' of a Carlton Official .
He does not deserve that Kind of Money.
What a joke you are St.Kilda for laying on that dough, no wonder you axed T.Brown and Sziller, Carlton will be the winners from this deal trust me.

Bring you all the juicy goss from around the league (mainly Vic Clubs)

Well sainters you'd wanna improve cause if these latest recruits cant snare you a premiership and record memberships over the next 3 to 4 years you's are rooted big time.

I get up in the evening and i ain't got nothing to say,I come home in the morning,I go to bed feeling the same way,I ain't nothing but tired,Man i'm just tired and bored with myself,Hey there baby,I could use just a little help.

what a load of crap. how would an associate of a carlton official know what st kilda are paying hamill. do you think the saints open their books for other clubs officials to look at, no chance. brown and sziller were delisted because they were overpaid slow second rate footballers, good riddance to them. time will tell whether hamill is worth the dough, he was definately the best available player in the draft. the saints have taken a calculated risk drafting hamill, and as the saying goes nothing ventured nothing gained.
oh and by the way the only joke in the afl is that ingnorant pig of a man, john elliot.

joffa, its been said before that this is the last roll of the dice for the saints, but we have been in the league from the very start and have survived tougher times than these. with a bit of success our name will drop below a number of other melbourne clubs as the next most likely club to fold.

Ive got no vested intersest here. I think that the saints have payed well over the odds for some fairly ordinary football talent. Having said that, so much of the business side of football is in the perception that you are doing something. People will have heard of Gerhig and Hammill and maybe they will buy memberships. This may mean that you have a larger membership base but it wont be very loyal. I see it as a huge gamble.

every club has to spend 95% of its salary cap. i am glad the saints have speculated on players that may just turn out to be extremely valuable team contributors. i would rather the club spend the money on new players that might make a difference rather than paying players who have been tried and have failed at the highest level. players such as brown, sziller, wakelin, (add others) were all on good money and all were not worth what we were paying for them.

850,000 dollars a season for 2 seasons......bullsh**. This thread is only aiming to get a high posting.

What those figures imply is basicaly $600,000 per year for four years, staggered to fit into each year's salary cap.
To stagger the amounts by half a million between the second and third years, means the Saints would theoretically have to further loosen $500,000 worth of players at the end of 2002. Thats probably 3-4 pretty decent players.
Surely not even St.Kilda would be this stupid.

Spot on STL.

Sorry to be picky STL, but Hamill was not drafted.
The Saints swapped the draft pick they got from Port for Darryl Wakelin (Number 4) for Hamill.
So this was a trade arrangement
Port got D. Wakelin
Saints got A. Hamill
Carlton got a kid - L. Livingston

As for how good this all turns out, only time will tell

The Insider is just a bitter Carlton person that is not used to good players leaving his club. Remember Greg Williams, Rhys-Jones and others. And before the draft they tended to get the best interstaters going around. They didn't go to Carlton because they liked the colour of their jumper.

I am not an insider of any kind, but I think what the inside MEANT to say was the following.

"My team overpaid Kouta and is now coming to terms with the consequences"

Have a nice day insider.

I'm sure there were a number of Saints players who agreed to take a pay cut, more out of embarassment at last year's effort than anything else.

But what happens if, as Saints' fans are predicting, they do rebound and make the top eight, or even higher? These players will want higher salaries again, and may decide to go elsewhere, while the Saints are left with Hamill, Gehrig, Lawrence and others on ridiculously large amounts of money.

This was a bad, bad move to get so many players at more than they are worth. This could kill St.Kilda.

Well said STL

I have read with interest how quickly people have jumped in to criticise St Kilda for opening up their chequebooks and going after the high profile players like Aaron Hamill and Fraser Gehrig.

But what do they want St Kilda to do?

We had just won our 26th wooden spoon after winning a disgraceful 2 wins for the season. As STL said, everyone has to pay at least 95% of the salary cap. So why should we consistently accept the mediocre performances from well paid players such as Tony Brown?

It amuses me that the same people criticising the club at the moment are often the same people who criticise the club for not doing enough to change its losing ways.

Does anyone thing a potential top-line footballer like Aaron Hamill would leave the perenially successful Carlton Football Club to come to an unsuccessful team like St Kilda for the same pay?

Of course not!

Rather than continually accepting mediocrity, the new hierarchy have gone all out to change the culture and make up of the entire club.

The Aaron Hamill figures quoted above, while seemingly unrealistic, do recognise that St Kilda will be paying the bulk of his salary in the 3rd and 4th years of his contract. It also recognises that St Kilda will be doing everything in its power to create a winning culture and challenge some of the larger clubs in the new future.

Who knows, we may fail big time and crash to another wooden spoon. Whatever happens, I will at least sleep easier knowing that everything is being done to turn this proud club around.

Nothing new with this post.
Exactly the figures I had heard Insider and its an open secret that Hamill originally wanted $600K per season but the Saints couldn't do that with their current players under the salary cap.

In 2 years time both Loewe and Burke will probably be retired and Harvey will be in the veteran stage so half his salary will not be included in the cap. This then leaves enough for Hamill's raise.
