I grew up playing soccer, and for years I didn't get the joke when people told me the position I would be playing is "left right out"... I thought that meant I would be playing an inside forward role once I got off the bench...

Most of what I learnt about aussie rules was through a mate who did play juniors giving me secondhand info from his coaches... but then he would change the rules to suit when I started to get the hang of it but of course I didn't clue until years later... the bastard!

i was always anti to the old U turn. Would much prefer a player running with ball or with their head over it against the flow, to give off to a player running toward them and their goal.Which in turn should bring the shepherd into play and rewards the runner. In some cases it obviously can't be avoided but in general.
Hated blokes snapping over their shoulder. (Which our young James does alot.)

Well the u turn leaves you unsighted to opposition, so should be coached out, also slows the flow of ball movement. There does need to be a runner actually working for you though, which is something else again.

It also leaves you unsighted to potential movement up the ground, hence the ball should , if possible, be given to a player with full vision running in that direction.

Trying to recall which ground had the best? Western Oval at the northern end, Moorabbin? Lakeside? And then there were some that looked great but had huge drop-offs over a bluestone retaining wall that were never tackled. Geez, those were the days, come back after the game covered in dirt/mud, smelling of second hand smoke and sprayed beer - all initiations into adulthood.
Kardinia Park in the 60's - both ends were workable and the donut van was right at the bottom.

Awesome .. Epic ..

One that has been really annoying me all year is if when you mark the ball you push back hard and look to play quickly. Lions just take the mark and jog slowly back with their backs to the mark. How can you possibly see if a player is free up the ground if you have your back turned? Redden is really bad for this.

I know football.... Hmmmm I have a confession, I don't think I do.

I grew up a long time ago in Roma, south west Qld where Artie Beetson was the king and Darren Lockyer and Willie Carne the princes. No one and I mean no one talked about 'aerial ping pong' let alone played it. Until this Victorian PE teacher joined the staff and his son, a bit of a gun at Aussie rules came with him.

Each year we had a sport competition with a school in brisbane, Wynnumm north I think and the pE teacher arranged for us to play Aussie rules in my last year. We had no idea except we loved playing 'force 'em back' at lunch kicking the ball as far as you can, it was a 'catch' if you 'marked' it.

Well some way in this game the ball was kicked into our back half and I saw the Teachers son, what a superstar he was, run up to become what was the greatest mark Roma has ever seen. I anticipated and ran sideways to the very vacant wing as we league players we're all in the centre like an under 10's auskick match.

Well he marked, got up quickly and kicked this magnificent drop punt 50 m to my leading stride. I marked it turned and with 30 m of space I ran, bounced ran and kicked it to full forwrd who marked and goaled. It was magnificent.

The Teachers son won the best on ground medal and I won 'most improved' which is ironic cause it was our only match. I wish now I kept the medal so much... I mean I really wish I kept it.

Well so I know that if you anticipate and run to space hard, you create opportunities to play on if the ball is kicked to your advantage. Yep, that's about it.

I played AFl 9's this summer, a comeback over 20 years later. I tried to run and create space. Hammy in rd 2 before Christmas break and tweaked the left groin in rd 4 in my comeback.

So I now also know I am too old for this shit. :D
